The gears are clunky because you are changing under heavy load. Not recommended at all. You have to back off slightly, particularly with the cheap Tourney groupset. With much higher spec groupset you can push it more under moderate load

Never seen an e bike rider, riding uphill like there was no motor.
Probably good bike for flat roads only.
