Great short. Also, they're not called 'gangs' in Brazil. They're called 'factions'. The big difference is a gang is a localized and loosely associated group of people who get together for a common criminal activity. In Brazil's case, a faction is a hierarchical criminal group whose activities and territories stretch much beyond their place of founding.

As a Brazilian I can tell you 3 things to not do in the favelas:
Don’t go out at night, especially with your wallet or other valuable things (like a car)
Be careful with weird people. They can carry guns or drugs
Be careful with cops too. They can be corrupted.
