Spawn is the MOST Underrated Character

Spawn is one of the most underrated characters in all of comics. He is a complex anti-hero. His real name is Al Simmons. He was a former government assassin who was betrayed and killed by his own agency. It was actually Simmons' closest friend, Bruce Stinson who was secretly hired to kill him. Simmons was burned to death and found himself at the gates of Hell.

It is there that he becomes a Hellspawn by making a pact with the devil and swearing to serve him in order to return to Earth to see his wife one last time. However the Devil tricked Simmons, he gave him power but took his memories. In turn, he defies his demonic masters and becomes a protector of humanity. He wanders the earth in a state of confusion with only vague memories of his former life. His suit is a living parasite that grants him a wide range of abilities including the ability to read minds, shapeshift, teleport, and summon various weapons and creatures of darkness.

However, his powers are fueled by Necroplasm and once it is depleted, he will return to Hell. Not wanting to return to Hell, Spawn attempts to use as little power as possible. The Spawn series explores themes of redemption and the eternal struggle between good and evil.
