My choice today is Scottish singer Shirley Manson from Garbage. Beyond her great voice, I think what she brought to the alternative pop rock scene of the 90s was her aggressive style and her sharp lyrics unlike other singers on the scene who were more playful and simple.
Day 20:Shirley Manson (Garbage)
Day 19: Elisabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
Day 18: Alison Goldfrapp (Goldfrapp)
Day 17: Susan Kay "Suzi" Quatro (Suzi Quatro)
Day 16: Melissa Auf der Maur (Hand of Doom)
Day 15: Karin Dreijer (The Knife-Fever Ray)
Day 14: Janis Joplin (Big Brother & the Holding Company)
Day 13: Alison Mosshart (The Kills / The Dead Weather )
Day 12: Cherrie Currie and Joan JeTT (The Runaways)
Day 11: Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Day 10: Bjork ( The Supercubes)
Day 9: Donita Sparks and Suzy Gardner (L7)
Day 8: Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Day 7: Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane)
Day 6: Debbie Harry (Blondie)
Day 5: Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac)
Day 4: Jenny Ball (Jenny and the Mexicats)
Day 3: Elin Larsson (Blues Pills)
Day 2: Ann Wilson (Heart)
Day 1: Exene Cervenka (X)

I’m seeing Nightwish tomorrow in London. Floor Jansen is my favourite vocalist and she is amazing live and on record. Floor just announced that she is cancer-free but will undergo some localised radiotherapy in February. Floor is just as tall (though has cut back on the heels so is not quite 6’5” on stage anymore), but her hair is shorter.

As mentioned, she is with Nightwish for their European tour starting in Antwerp tonight. Her voice is magical whether with Nightwish, After Forever, ReVamp or any of her guest appearances or solo and other projects.

Let me get this straight...people are complaining about Pete's picks of his favorite bands on his show? Here's an idea - if you don't like Pete's picks, start your own YouTube channel and list your own picks. For me, I end up listening to some of Pete's picks of bands I don't know much about. Some I like, some, not so much. But, geez, give them a listen; you may end up finding a new band to listen to.

Good morning Pete. Kudos to you with eloquent response to a few people's criticism. The vast majority of your audience including me GETS IT
Happy that you stick to your guns & pick YOUR FAVORITES! Have a great day
Love your channel. Rock on brother!

Pete's choices are great, whether it is an iconic institution such as Heart or a lesser known group deserving of more exposure. I also feel derision of a choice such as Glass Hammer is missing a core virtue of Sea of Tranquility: Pete has an expertise in veins of music such as prog, symphonic rock, more left-field veins of metal, etc., so viewers can either learn from him or, if they are similarly well-versed, revel in the shared music nerdom. The Internet has a lot of music Web sites and channels, so these singular passions are a draw: if my mind is on Animal Collective or Radiohead, there's Pitchfork, but then another part of me can't wait to hear Pete review the new Candlemass record or riff with Martin on, say, '90s Jethro Tull. Criticizing Pete for deep dives into his preferred pools of music is absolutely bizarre because those moments are an SoT staple and highlight.

Pete, you never have to justify your picks with anyone. Us loyal followers respect everything you do. Some people aren't happy unless they're bitching. Don't like it, don't watch. Pete has so many cool and respectful followers that he doesn't need the ones full of nonsense. Thanks Pete, us true followers have your back!

Floor Jansen is my second favorite vocalist behind Ronnie James Dio. Her performance at the 2013 Wacken concert won me over. Incredible.

Maggie Bell from Stone The Crows, a blues rock band from the early 70s who signed to Swan song, but never really made a big commercial impact. At one time, the late great Jimmy Dewar was also a member. Maggie is sometimes labelled the Scottish Janis Joplin and listening to her, it is an obvious comparison. Maggie also sang, as a solo artist, the themes to a couple of popular UK TV series. A strong, throaty gutsy soulful blues singer, who has never got the plaudits and commercial success she deserves.

Day 20. Laurie Anderson. In addition to a musical performer, Laurie is also an artist, author, composer, and film maker. An accomplished violinist, she also designed 2 instruments: The tape-bow violin and a fascinating instrument she named "The Talking Stick". (Details about these instruments can be found on the internet among other places). Laurie was married to Lou Reed in 2008 until his passing in 2013. She has also done some music collaboration with Adrian Belew. Favorite album, Big Science. Also check out her film, Heart of a Dog.

Also, really appreciate your commentary today Pete.

Great pick Peter! Nightwish I started listening to them for about 4 years now! All three women brought their own unique vocals to the band! Floor quite possibly is my favourite of the three🤯! As of today I saw Floor’s post and it read she had successful surgery to remove the cancer and she is doing well! 👍🏻👍🏻🇫🇮

Cheers,
Mike L 😎🇨🇦🤘🏻

I totally agree Pete. People in general need to stop taking it personally if someone doesn't love an album they love or vice versa. It's an opinion on the music/album not the person who loves or doesn't love it.

Pick for Day 20: Florence (Florence Welch) and the Machine with Ceremonials. Incredible songs with a very beautiful voice. Kind of starting to worry some of my picks might not fit since there are only 10 days left, although I am 100% sure which one I'm saving for the final day even though none of my picks have had any real order.

I haven't so far given my picks for female fronted bands this month, since you have so far put most of my picks, Pete, so there has been no need for me to put mine. At least that's how I feel. I could add a Swedish singer that I feel could fit in here, Marie Fredriksson. She started out as a solo act, but later joined forces with Swedish musician Per Gessle to form Roxette. Her voice fit a lot of genres, and I think she could have done metal too, had she been inclined to do so. Sadly we lost her in 2019 to cancer. What a great singer.

Loved your wee rant at beginning. One thing I particularly like about you and your channel is that your love of music is heartfelt. You have also opened your mind to other bands in general outwith the gold old U S of A and that you seem to love many of my favourite UK bands and artists
A superb choice of Floor Jansen with Nightwish. Arguably the best female vocalist at the moment, singing in all styles rock, metal pop, ballad, operatic, her talent and vocal skills are off the scale. I only discovered Nightwish about 3 years ago and they are now my favourite band. Each singer brings their own style to the band, but IMHO, Floor just shades it due to her versatility
Great starting point for anyone who has never heard of Floor or Nightwish, is their 2013 performance of Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013, but do start off with subtitles on. The note she hits around 9 min 40 sec is astounding
