Tungsten is by far My very favorite industrial metal. It has the highest melting point of any naturally occurring element. It furthermore possesses prodigious tensile strength, and is impressively dense. I purchased a cubic inch of it, just an example piece, which I have on a stand at my desk at work. Sometimes I like to pick it up, feel the heft, recognize the difference between weight and mass. Because, it's not just "heavy" - despite being so small, its mass resists lateral motion as you move your hand one way and then the other. It's quite grounding. When I have people pick it up, they wonder if there's some sort of trick; they ask if it was magnetized to the desktop.

Tungsten's thermal resistance made it a prime candidate for considerations of a kinetic impactor warhead - to drop a telephone pole sized shaft of tungsten from orbit. It would certainly survive reentry, and proceed to impact the ground at approximately Mach 22. That much Mass hitting with that much speed imparts sufficient force to be measured in the kiloton range. With no explosives! No ignition, no payload, no incendiary substances or detonations on board; just a PUNCH FROM SPACE.

Sometimes this hypothetical weapons system is referred to as "Rods from God."
