How A Poor Korean Boy Created Hyundai

30 years ago, Hyundai was seen as a small Korean company that made cheap, ugly and unreliable vehicles. People even joked about the brand, saying you could double a Hyundai’s value if you filled it up with gas.
But now a days… they are among the best quality vehicles in the market, overthrowing giants like Ford, Honda and General Motors, to become the third largest producer of cars in the global market.
But what’s fascinating about this, is the man who started it all.
A farm boy, who only wanted to escape from poverty, left home as a teenager and embarked on a journey full of failures, misfortunes and embarrassments.
Despite the adversity, he went on to create the biggest company in South Korea and took over by storm not only the automobile industry, but also shipbuilding, construction and so much more, turning himself into the richest man in Korea.
This is the rags to riches story of Hyundai, and the man behind it, Chung Yu-Jung.

In Korea, there's a famous phrase from Chung Ju Young "해봤어?" meaning "Have you tried?". When his employees always say, "that's impossible" when Chung Ju Young ordered them to do some tasks which was pretty much an impossible task at the time, and he will reply "Have you tried?" and take an action, then he would have accomplished the task.

Hyundai first introduced the Santro in India in 1998. At that time it was the most advanced car we had ever seen as India had a closed economy and the car market was in its infancy. At that time, nobody had seen a car like the Santro, it wasn’t the most comfortable or best looking but its engine was reliable and efficient, along with decent power, which other brands lacked. It was an instant hit at that time.

Mr. Chung always said, “hey dude, have you ever try this?!” He didn’t have any fear to do and think of failure. That’s the footages of Hyundai.

I bought a Hyundai Excel in 1990 as a young sailor in the US Navy. It was only $5, 000 but was loaded. My first car with power steering, power brakes, ac, cassette play, power windows, central locking, automatic transmission! For my young family, it was luxury! Velour seats was so comfy. Thanks, Hyundai! You took care of my wife and 2 kids!

Overall, Hyundai's journey from a relatively small South Korean automaker to a global automotive powerhouse is a testament to its dedication to innovation, quality, and adaptability in the ever-evolving automotive industry.

After driving my 1st Hyundai car,
it opened my eyes and heart. Its quality and services impressed me so much.
Mr. Chung proved that the last runner can take over the 1st runner.
I give him respect for his tireless effort and enthusiasm no matter how life treated him.
I am thankful knowing him and driving his product.

I have a picture of him and my grandfather who was the first economist of Korea. They were well acquainted and had a long history together. These people were movers and shakers. He didn't just run companies but helped spur the economy of an entire country. The impact was enormous no doubt.

Being someone who has seen way too many failures in life myself, from rags to riches and back again multiple times, i can totally relate with the last words where he says that one must never forget their failures. Being an example myself i know what that means. I have lived those nerve-shattering moments so many times that now it doesnt feel that bad but keeps me motivated moving forward. Failures is all i remember. Good times were only there as i reminder that its always possible to succeed with the right attitude.

Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are really nice cars. I owned 2 Hyundais before and loved them. Now I own a Genesis made by Hyundai, it's more luxurious than a Mercedes and cost half to maintain.

This makes so much sense because my Hyundai surpasses my expectation on quality for the Korean brand in every aspect! I remember vowing never to buy a Korean car to taking a chance on Hyundai Sante Fe and turns out to be one of the best value for money purchase of my life. The car have basically no issue from small to big. It just works in every aspect and it was cheap for coming with every bell and whistle. My friend got a Mercedes and it was endless headache, wind swiper being a major one a hahah! Now I know it’s not a fluke I got a good car

I had a 2011 Sonata that was alright, just an appliance. Now the 22 Elantra N Line has some soul. Hand built, hand stitched. Great performance
