I Went to Melilla - What Did I Find There?

I've known about Spain's territorial holdings in North Africa for decades and I've been interested to visit one or both of them for as long as I've known about them. So I was really excited to finally make it to Melilla. Actually the harder of the two to visit as the other enclave, Ceuta, is a relatively short ferry ride from Algeciras, which in turn is a relatively short trip from Gibraltar.

I'm not sure what I expected, but I found a fiercely Spanish community, surrounded by high fences and supported by a significant law enforcement community... It was a fascinating trip, and I'll show you what I found in this video!

As you call it, a geographical peculiarity, and based on that, well worth the trip! After watching your excellent video, I still want to go there sometime. Maybe by helicopter or plane rather than the rather long, uninteresting ferry journey, but now very much on the list. I'd take out of season 'cool' though rather than peak season hot, as I imagine hot really does mean hot in those parts...Thanks for the video!

Thought I was back at school Matt getting a history lesson 😀😀😀 very well researched and interesting to.

The old buildings and the Fort area looked nice for walking about, as you said maybe summer time be best.

Don't fancy waiting till 8-9 pm to eat far to late for us, can't be good going to bed shortly after eating and meal lying in you stomach.

I didn't actually know this place even existed until your video about the ferry but fascinating to see it! Thank you. I am fond of quirky places but your video is probably enough for me on this particular occasion.

I love this. Perhaps a Matts Planet weird location meetup would be interesting.

Really interesting and educational, Matt. Another quirky place you might consider visiting in the future - yes I realise it's not possible at present - is Kaliningrad.

Like yourself, I've know about the Spanish enclaves in North Africa for years but have never been. Realy enjoyed getting to see Melilla through your presentation (history fascinates me in general, and and I find quirks of geopolitical geography like this intriguing.)

I loved the intestines description. It is definitely a statue of intestines.

It seems a little odd that the season had ended when it is clear that the weather was still very pleasant, Perhaps it is due to the fact that most tourists are Spanish. The attitude to weather is very influenced by what people are used to and many Spanish people are used to very warm weather as a matter of course. I once got in a taxi from the airport at Las Palmas and the driver informed me that the weather was now very cold in Las Palmas. I was sunbathing on the beach the next day!

Lovely Old Europe. The beach seems drab in a typical European way. Definitely not the Caribbean. Nor like Dubai The Palm, nor like Maldives. I think that if I wanted to escape to a traditional and quiet European beach, I might try it once. Maybe this summer?

Funny how we have these interesting trips in mind. Mine from being a boy is (well probably was now) to stand on the beach, if there is a beach, on the Russian side of the Bering straights looking over to Alaska. No idea why!

As a Spanish speaker, I can assure you Melilla is pronounced meleeya.

I too have looked at this place on the map and wondered. I priced up flights and hotels previously, but I’ve never gone. It’s on the list still, but if I never end up going, it won’t make it to my list of death bed regrets. (Morbid thoughts to brighten everyone’s day 😅 )

Your approach toward hotels is common sense especially going forward . I’d much rather support a local hotel if possible and also save some money.

Yeah they always want the territory or sovereignty or whatever but end up going to Europe illegally anyway after they ruin the place. Think Kosovo, think all the former African colonies.

The fact is that what is stolen and colonized needs to be given back. The idea that morocco exists from 1956 is a joke. It's one of the oldest kingdoms in the world. And ruled by multiple dynasties a country for 1400 years.
