First Look Of India's New Parliament Building | British Legacy Pales Into The Past? | India Upfront

In this episode of India Upfront, host Shivshankar will discuss how the expansive new Parliament building, which will be consecrated on May 28 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was featured in a brief video that the government published on Friday. The lengthy 'Ashok Stambh' that was put atop the new structure last year is first seen in the 1 minute, 47 second long clip. The new Parliament complex is then shown in various locations, and the top view of the 65,000-square-meter building is shown. Along with the Rajya Sabha chamber, it also displays the new Lok Sabha chamber, which features a peacock motif. There will be 1,272 seats available in total across the two chambers. While renderings of the new structure have been circulating for some time, this is the first opportunity for people to glimpse the new Parliament's interior after it has been finished. In 1927, two decades before India gained independence, British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker constructed the historic structure just opposite from the new, triangular-shaped parliament complex. The new structure will be inaugurated on May 28 by PM Modi. The passing of the "Sengol" (sceptre) will kick off the ritual at 7:30 a.m. We are joined by a few panelists expressing their views on this issue. “The operative word is history and I would like to take this dialogue away from considerations of politics and considerations of religions,” stated Professor Madhav Nalapat.
