This is the episode that taught me about the black hole illusion (which was one of the contributing factors) and also the fact that the captain flew a 737 like a turboprop.

AIRES Flight 8250 was a domestic scheduled passenger flight that on 16 August 2010 crashed on landing at night in poor weather on the Colombian island of San Andrés, killing two of the 131 people on board. The aircraft, an AIRES-operated Boeing 737-700, was arriving from the Colombian capital Bogotá when it heavily touched down short of the runway, breaking up in three sections.

That must have been really scary. It’s not easy landing at night. I’m becoming a trained pilot and I know a lot about planes. And that crash seemed very deadly to me. And it is amazing how only 2 people died! But I’m not that surprised either. The nose got separated right after the crash. And it’s good how they were close to the runway! That way people were alerted someone crashed and people could come check on them.

The official investigation concluded that the crash was caused by the misjudgment by the crew of the aircraft's altitude during the last phase of the approach.[1]
