Are you interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy but not sure which degree pathway to choose? In this video, we'll be discussing the differences between PharmD, BPharm, and MPharm and what each degree entails. We'll also explore the career opportunities and potential salaries for each degree. Whether you're a high school student considering pharmacy as a career, or a current pharmacy student looking to switch degree pathways, this video will provide you with valuable insights to help you make an informed decision.

If you're interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy, you may be wondering which degree pathway is right for you. While there are several options available, the two most popular degree pathways for pharmacists are Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and Master of Pharmacy (Mpharm).

PharmD is a professional degree pathway that prepares students for a career as a licensed pharmacist. The program typically takes four years to complete and includes a combination of coursework, experiential learning, and clinical rotations. Students in a PharmD program will study a variety of topics, including drug therapy, pharmacy management, and patient care. They will also gain hands-on experience working in different settings, such as hospitals, retail pharmacies, and community health clinics.

On the other hand, Mpharm is an academic degree pathway that focuses on the science and research aspects of pharmacy. This program typically takes four years to complete in the UK, while in other countries such as Canada or the United States it takes around 2 years post-Bpharm. Students in an Mpharm program will study topics such as pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, and drug development. They will also have the opportunity to work on research projects and gain hands-on experience in laboratories.

The key difference between PharmD and Mpharm is the focus of the program. PharmD is designed to prepare students for a career as a licensed pharmacist, while Mpharm is focused on the academic and research aspects of pharmacy. Both pathways require a strong foundation in science, math and biology, as well as a passion for helping others.

1. Professional vs. Academic Focus: If you're interested in working as a licensed pharmacist and providing direct patient care, then PharmD is the preferred pathway. If you're more interested in research or academic pursuits, then Mpharm is more suitable.

2. Residency-training Programs: In countries like the United States, pharmacist require a minimum one-year residency training post-graduation from Pharmacy school to become a licensed practicing pharmacist. PharmD programs already include such training in their degree while Mpharm does not. This makes choosing the PharmD program a more practical choice for future practicing pharmacists.

3. Career Opportunities: Both PharmD and Mpharm degree pathways can lead to fulfilling careers in the pharmaceutical industry, academia, and research institutions. The difference is the type of position you will qualify for at the end of the program. With PharmD, you are eligible for positions like a clinical pharmacist, retail pharmacist or hospital pharmacist whereas, with an Mpharm, you may qualify for positions such as a research scientist or pharmaceutical researcher as post-graduation positions.

In conclusion, whether you choose PharmD or Mpharm, you will be entering a rewarding career with opportunities for growth and advancement. It's important to carefully consider your career goals and interests when choosing a degree pathway. Ultimately, a career in pharmacy offers the chance to make a difference in people's lives by improving their health outcomes and contributing to the field of medicine.

I am a PharmD graduate from University of Benin (UNIBEN) Nigeria. I am glad i did it because i spent straight 6 years. To convert from BPharm (5 years) to PHarmD, it will take 3 years. They are trying to make it 2 years. At a point there was a special PharmD conversion program in UNIBEN but it required one to be a clinical Pharmacist (after practicing in a known number of years in a clinical setting) and of course more money will be spent.

Let me add that the remuneration for a PharmD Pharmacist in some settings is higher than that of a BPharm Pharmacist.

For people that wants to do m.pharm & a PhD in Pharmacy, with a PharmD, what's the duration in Nigeria?
I heard in the UK you can go straight for PhD if you have a PharmD. But i don't know if it applies the same in Nigeria
