CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sandy (Laura Dern) shares some details of the police case with Jeffrey (Kyle MacLachlan), and he demonstrates the chicken walk.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director David Lynch crafted this hallucinogenic mystery-thriller that probes beneath the cheerful surface of suburban America to discover sadomasochistic violence, corruption, drug abuse, crime and perversion. Kyle Maclachlan stars as Jeffrey Beaumont, a square-jawed young man who returns to his picture-perfect small town when his father suffers a stroke. Walking through a field near his home, Jeff discovers a severed human ear, which he immediately brings to the police. Their disinterest sparks Jeff's curiosity, and he is soon drawn into a dangerous drama that's being played out by a lounge singer, Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) and the ether-addicted Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper). The sociopathic Booth has kidnapped Dorothy's young son and is using the child as a bargaining chip to repeatedly beat, humiliate and rape Dorothy. Though he's drawn to the virginal, wholesome Sandy Williams (Laura Dern), Jeff is also aroused by Dorothy and in trying to aid her, he discovers his dark side. As the film nears its conclusion, our hero learns that many more indivduals are tacitly involved with Frank, including a suave, lip-synching singer, Ben (Dean Stockwell), who is minding the kidnapped boy. Director Lynch explored many similar themes of the "disease" lying just under the surface of the small town, all-American faade in his later television series Twin Peaks (1990-91).

I tried doing this in front of a girl in high school and she never talked to me again

You can clearly see Lynch's love for the 1950s and 1960s rock'n roll in the whole style of this film. And it has always been a recurring motive in his works. But it stands out the most in "Blue Velvet". A film supposedly playing in 1986 but often feels like it's kinda falling out of the timeframe and being a 50s, 60s, 80s hybride. It is what i always liked the most about this film.

What I love about Blue Velvet is how it manages to have such charming, innocent scenes like this one, but then has such sadistic scenes with Frank Booth in the apartment. David Lynch did a wonderful job directing this film, making one that carries such darkness, while also carrying a lot of humanity to the film, too. Blue Velvet is truly an excellent film.

Nothing confusing about the chicken walk. He was just trying to be funny/charming in front of a girl.

I feel like Lynch added the chicken walk scene just to confuse everyone

I love that random dolly insert shot (the first clip of the video) and how it is basically just a non-sequitur in the scene. In most films, a shot like this would reveal something, or it would aid in telling the story somehow. In this film however, the shot is just dead center in Jeffery and Sandy's conversation. The shot is purely for mood or atmosphere, not plot. I love that

I find the car pulling up and the guys cat calling one of those little details that could be seen as emblematic. It is not a plot point but a story point. A dangerous spot in town, men making women feel maybe unsafe. The atmosphere is building to where the movie and rest of story is headed. It’s a creeping shadow, something we’re experiencing for just a moment now but soon will be covered in it all.
