Strange, why are people mainly migrating to the West and not to Russia? Why is it that when you speak to Russian people (not the small amount of rich ones, real Russian people) that they say economy is not what it should be and life in Russia starts to become difficult? Why is media in Russia fully controlled by state? Why is he not saying what is the rzal motive of his actions (control over ukraine warm water ports and cut them off from black sea to gain total control of the Kaspian in order to take back the resources - oil\gas is most important one - to take the West in a holding grip when it comes to energy? At this moment, Russian government is one of the most corrupt ones since Stalin. Putin knows he liscalculated based on info of intelligence organizations not daring to go against his ideas - as that would expose incompetence of certain people meaning death. It is basically what happens to any of this kind of regimes: corruption ends true power. Trying to get total control always ends in loosing all control as the leader ends up in a position where he can trust noone.

This speach is just a weak attempt to convince Russians. It is even not really targeted to Western public as he knows we are informed here (at least the people who tok the time to check facts and numbers). It is just an attempt to get the growing group of Russian people who start having doubts about all that is happening and what is told on state controlled television back in line. He is just grasping straws now. He might get back control on the situation but a regime change in Ukraine with the whole country suppirting it (which was the initial goal) is not a real option anymore. Damage control is all he can do, and the more he pushes, the more damage there will be and the less he will be able to control\contain. Putin is a strategic mastermind. But his entourage is not. Combination of both is lethal as resulting miscalculations have a cost way higher than can be supported by the country, even if that country is Russia. Mistakes have been made and the price will be paid. It always has been like that and it wil, always be like that. And the price to pay will NOT be imposed by Western countries. It will be defined by the Russian people...
