Golf Grip: Role of the Trigger Finger

Right Hand Golf Grip: Trigger Finger

In this video I talk about the golf grip but in more detail the right hand trigger finger. This is a very important set up position that you must understand and get. Most people that I see have a weak or poor grip, I explain the correct golf grip. Getting this position will help other areas in your swing and game. The trigger finger is one of the key parts of the grip.

Understanding this position is as important as the position itself. On your right hand, or low hand, on the grip, your index finger should look like it's about to pull a trigger on a gun. This is why it is called the trigger finger. If you held it up in front of you it should look like a question mark. This is the supporting finger of the golf club.

This position is one of the most overlooked positions when forming the proper golf grip. It not only supports the golf club at your set up but also creates a "V" at the top of your back swing to give the club a cradle to support it at the top of the swing. It should be separated only slightly from your middle finger.

By learning the proper placement of that finger, it allows many other things in your swing to be correct. When this finger is in the right placement, you can then check to see if your right, lower, hand is in the correct placement. This will also allow you to see if your club at the top of your golf swing is setting properly. Also, not enough gap between the fingers makes the grip weak, too much and it will also give a weak feeling. This position is critical in maintaining a good golf swing.

By learning the trigger finger you can then get what is a good golf grip. I see many people and they always overlook this finger. There are many different ways to grip a club, yet this is a position that is critical to check that you have the correct grip. Getting this small change will help have a more powerful grip and keep stronger positions in your swing.

Hey Paul...I've followed you're instruction since I began playing 10 years ago originally purchasing your "Swing Machine Golf" dvd set...I had been having a problem with hooks occasionally while playing a round and discovered that I was allowing my index finger to become to closed to the other fingers in the grip...I think this was allowing my hands to turn over too quickly...I just caught this video today and was glad to see you re-inforce the idea of separating the index finger...I think it not only anchors the club on top, but also prevents the wrists from over rotating...Thanks...

Glad you like the videos. Thanks. I have a video on this but it is not published. What you need to do is stop sliding laterally. In the follow through lock the left leg and have the right leg touch the left. If the left leg locks you are turning not sliding.

I like the overlap grip. This creates a secure connection in the left hand and weakens the right. I have the other videos on the placement of the 2 hands in on this channel. I cannot post links so just search for them. Once you learn the grip keep the wrists loose enough to allow them to turn over. If this still doesn't unlock them manually roll them over until you hook it. Then turn your body to straighten you shots back out.

has a massive problem with slicing caused by an open club face. Using this tip, I was able to stop that happening. Cheers!

Your videos have helped me get down to an 8 handicap. The videos on the grip in particular are the best I've seen. When I seperate my right index finger I feel tension in that finger at the TOP of the swing, which then puts pressure on my right thumb. The club feels very stable like this but I'm unsure if I should be feeling that tension at the top. When I reduce the gap between the index and middle finger the tension goes away but at the cost of some stability. What would you recommend?

Im having problems finding my "Grip" of choice i guess youd say, ive been out of golf for a while and have recently gotten back into it, Which im thrilled of by the way, but im having a bit of trouble with slicing, and i know it has to do with my grip, so can you tell or do you have a video of the best way to grip the club?
Thanks and all help is greatly appreciated.
PS: love your videos, they are a great help, keep them up!

the gaped index finger creates a closed V so club doesn't move at the top  ) Thanks forgotten about that finger position...
