Light was always won because he always held the high ground: the ability to kill anyone on comman via the death note after meeting easy requirements was difficult to overcome even for L. However, Lelouch is used to concealing his identity and fighting from a the low ground to gain impossible victories. Also Light lost because he couldnt adequately manage the 1 surbordinate that he shared his power and knowledge with. Lelouch managed entire continents with ease.
