My idea for exactly this - five year terms, a jury system type thing whereby every adult has to do at least one term, and while in office they receive no salary, cannot use private transport only public, cannot live in their own house but must be a guest in the houses of their constituents, a week at a time, going from constituent to constituent, entirely supported by those constituents, who will treat them exactly as well as they treat the constituents and the larger country.
