When toddler hand leads you instead of using words… #languagedevelopment #toddlerlife #speechdelay

When a toddler is leading you (or pointing/gesturing in any way), they are communicating without words that they want something. If we ask a question like “where are we going?” “What do you want?” and they don’t answer, it’s not teaching the child what language they can use next time/in the future.

Instead model phrases like “let’s go mommy!” And “come with me!”

Bonus points: If you know where your child is taking you—the the pantry for example—you can model more specific language like “Let’s eat!” “I’m hungry!” “Let’s go to the pantry!” Etc.
