Caroline you are correct, it is easier to cut longer hair than it is short hair. I have been cutting the hair of female friends, acquaintances, and my wife’s hair for quite a number of years, of varying lengths of short bobs all of the way to trimming hair that was down to a friend ‘s calves. It does take longer to comb out, section and trim long hair, layer by layer, but once you establish the guide rather it is blunt cut across the bottom or 90 degree cutting on the sides, it is relatively simple. You do need the right tools and supplies though. I use a cape, hair clips, a sectioning comb and very sharp hair shears when I do my wife’s hair that reaches past her elbows. It takes me about 20-25 minutes. When I give her two boys who have short hair their haircuts, I use the clippers with different number attachments, as well as the shears over the comb for blending the different lengths with the longer hair on top.
For your hair to properly trim and shape it, parting it down the middle, sectioning it just behind the ears on both sides, then pinning up nearly all the hair, leaving just about 1/2” at the lowest level all around would be the best start. Trim a minimal amount, 1/2-3/4” off, check under your chin to ensure it is even, then let down the upper layers in 1/2” increments to trim each layer to match the layer below. The grabbing a chunk and randomly cutting It doesn’t give you the nicely groomed, evenly shaped hair all around. Doing it right takes a little longer, but when you are taking the shears to a lady’s hair, it has to be done right. I have had my wife’s friends ask if I could cut their hair for them as they like how my wife’s hair looks as well as having my wife ask if I could fix a bad salon haircut for a friend. I don’t know why the salon stylists make such a mess when they are supposed to be “licensed professionals” but one friend said getting the hair license is like getting a driver’s license when you are 16, you are no expert, but have a basic skillset that needs to be practiced and you learn by experience. And I see people who have been driving for years who cannot grasp the concept of driving the speed limit and staying on their side of the road.
