Two fundamental concepts when it comes to learning (anything), novelty and repetition. In this video, I go over why these two things are important for language learners.

I find these videos motivating even though there is repetition.

Your rambling talks are NOT BORING!! I have just discovered my passion for languages last year and I don’t really have anyone to talk to about it so I thoroughly enjoy hearing your thoughts- I’ve listened to your videos sometimes 2-3 times just because I really enjoy your content. ThankYou for sharing!!

I practice my English with your videos so I'm glad you say the same things in different ways, using different words and structures. It's really helpful.

I was blown away by how important novelty is to maintain motivation. Discovering that motivation is one of the most important emotional responses to reduce stress, potential burnout, and most importantly keeping enjoyment high, I am constantly reading as each page provides endless amounts of novelty. The perspective you approach the new material with greatly dictates whether it’s positive or negative. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Je suis d'accord avec vous. I have been learning French since 2017 and first year I learned nothing with traditional methods. Now with listening and reading I have well over a thousand known words on linq and now I'm making real progress.

I appreciate your videos. I am a Lingq subscriber and a very interested language learner and teacher. I don't find your videos 'rambling'. It continues the conversation of discovering language learning. Thank you. Keep them coming.

Hey Steve, I’m an Englishman living in Denmark. My Danish is passable but I would say my level of comprehension has skyrocketed since discovering LingQ. It’s an absolute joy to use and I’m now looking forward to starting on German. I have a one and a half hour commute to work in the car, so I regularly dip into your videos as a sort of motivational boost; they’re always enjoyable plus you’re such a nice chap....long story short, keep them coming, they’re never boring and you now feel like an old friend to me. The keyboard warriors out there can always find something else to watch eh?

Your videos are not repetitive or boring. In fact, there are some topics that you have covered in previous videos that I wish you would discuss again. For example, I would like you to give your current thoughts on Google Translate and how you are using it. Thanks.

It's always a pleasure to watch your videos, dear Steve. I keep saying to my students that the secret of mastering anything is REPETITION. I watch the same video or movie many, many times over a long period of time. There are videos that I watch over the years. When it comes to language learning, this is very powerful. I teach ONLINE and I record my classes, not the whole class but 30 to 40 minutes of the most important parts of it. This mobile passive learning is great! You don't have to stop what you're doing, just press play, listen to it as you keep doing what you are suppose to do(clean the house, walk, drive to work..). Would you agree that watching past classes or just listening to them is a great way of learning as well? thanks for your ideas! Best Regards!

Nothing is wasted. You say things in different ways each time. I am different each time. I can't listen for hours, but 12 minutes usually teaches me (or reminds me of) at least 1 good idea. That's 12 minutes very well spent, to me. Today I was undecided what to do next, because I have 9 days left at one website. Now I know: re-listen to the stories there over and over, instead of just once. Thanks for another good idea!

I like reading (though listening is helpful as well). I either read books I am familiar with or something new, the key is that I must be interested about what is going on. The common words and phrases in the language will repeat themselves. I do not mind flashcard to learn the most common words, but I do not like to be swamped by revisions, so I quickly move to reading (and recently watching Netflix) and I am quite naturally reminded of words I would have forgotten otherwise and quite naturally learn some new words as well.

No issue with the repetition, it's always a good bit of motivation for me when I am feeling burnt out on language learning!

Thanks Steve. Very useful video and not boring at all! It’s good to be reminded of the simplicity of language learning: listen and read. The novelty is in new content rather than bouncing between fads to become fluent. Just listen and read... I’ll get there. 感谢

Not boring! I have been following you for many years and I love your down home, improvisational style! Some day you may want to add a fireplace and rocking chair to your set (heh-heh)! I also appreciate your willingness to challenge the academic status quo and to approach controversial subject with your perspective from actual experience. To hell with flash card programs and goofy-apps and boring graded stories. I’m reading Tolkien and Henning Mankell and native level thrillers and mysteries while listening to streaming audiobooks. Keep ‘em coming Steve!
