End of an era: 99 Cents Only to close all store locations

After nearly 42 years in business, one of America's favorite discount stores will close all locations in California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas.

I went there the other day to buy some poster papers. And i saw the person behind me buying all kinds of food items. I felt sad they were getting food there 99 cent store. But now I feel sad the stores are closing. Where will people who live on a tight budget go. We help so many other countries, now it’s time to help our country.

OMG!!! I used to work for that company!!! The original owner was a billionaire from LA who came up with the idea that he could buy all these products and sell them for ONLY 99c to the POOR people!!! The original owner died a few years ago!!! But if he was alive today, he would be devasted to see his stores close!!!

I'm devastated because there was one location I relied on because it was clean, safe, and friendly. All the dollar stores are grimy and are located in crime infested areas. I'm out of options.

Also many many employees are quitting to go to fast food restaurants for the higher pay ($20hr). I was just at the local 99 Cents store a couple of days ago for my cleaning solutions and I asked the cashier, "where is everyone at?" and she said, " most employees quit for fast food jobs, now we are short-handed!" I said, "dang that sucks" and then the manager was standing there and she said, "well I have been an assistant manager here for almost 4 years and I only get $18.50 an hour". I am sorry this is just so sad for everyone...

In an inflationary environment with high crimes, how can any store sell anything for only 99 cents and still make a profit?

Im shocked at the amount of comments saying well its not 99cents anymore so not affordable.
I literally went there just the other day to grab a couple of items for a baby shower I was throwing. I found everything I needed from candle vases, to the prizes (yes some items were $5) .... But still thats cheap this day and age. I only spent $60 and got 8 prizes, the gift bags, vases, photo frames, clothespins and some decorations (including balloons. At amazon/walmart/ Family Dollar all those items were more expensive.... With not that much better quality.
I guess more people are paying for convenience versus going in Person and grabbing the items
