Beautiful! May they never be forgotten, these brave boys who packed up their troubles in their old kit-bags and went to war

My mom grew up during the war every once in a while she would sing this song. I miss her.

In case any one was wondering 'lucifer' and 'fag' are slang terms(not sure if specifically British soldier slang or just general British slang) for match and cigarette respectively.

All smiles and visions of glory as young men head off. Makes me cry.

Best version I have ever heard. True to the melody and not over the top ; with prioritisation on the vocals of the men

I was taught this at my school growing up in Bristol in the early 90s …even after all these years and returning to my country (Brazil) I remember these songs vividly!!!

My great, great uncle was in the us artillery, he was a Kentucky man, and he went over to France in 1917, he came out with a silver star. I never met him, but I hear about him from my family, i imagine he was probably forced to listen to this. Good song, wish there were some from this generation left.

Although this song covers a bad period, it is a magnificent work. It looks pretty nostalgic. Good job mate!

This song gives me a really disturbing feeling; I can imagine these men, jolly and full of pride and patriotism, marching and singing this tune - only to discover the true horrors of the trenches, and for their romanticised view of war to instantly shatter

This brings tears to my eyes. The THOUSANDS of young men who never
came home again.

Just so that nobody gets confused here, a "fag" is a cigarette in northern England. So don't get any funny ideas lads.

Also grand version mate, top class 👏

This is not only a beautiful song and great version of it, but WOW, WHAT A GREAT VIDEO! I have never seen this before. I really am into history I even met the pilot who dropped the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima and others, including veterans and a German soldier who was in world war 2. But to see this, and those brave British and I think possibly Irish men marching off to war is AMAZING! To see them all standing there with their hats on..standing so brave. By the way, Americans came late to the party, but we had volunteers fighting there since 1916. They were fighter pilots flying in a famous French squadron. After less than a year the Germans surrendered after American troops began arriving in large numbers. There were close to 2 .5 Million US soldiers when the war ended. It was not that the Americans were better than the others, just the sheer numbers were finally too much for the Germans. If you want to see a movie about an American Battalion during world war 1, the movie LOST BATTALION is excellent and a true story. Ricky Schroeder starred in it. So I think it came out in the 90s. Its really good. I think the video we are seeing here is from world war 2 however. Judging by the cars, for sure 1930s cars, some 40s. Not sure about the entire video, but yes I think much of this is world war 2. Either way, seeing them march off to fight is amazing!

Ahh! I recall my Mum singing this in the 1940's. History repeats itself! The uniforms are different now but, sadly the scenes all too familiar!
