Mahidevran was the concubine of the Ottoman Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, and the mother of Şehzade Mustafa, the eldest surviving son of the reigning Sultan, and the first in the line to ascend the imperial throne.

She was the chief consort of Sultan Suleiman before his succession to the Throne until Hürrem Sultan came in to his life. Later, Mahidevran just retained the status of the mother of Suleiman's eldest son.

In Turkey, her story makes everyone very sad. Ironically, I know that many people are hostile to Sultan Süleyman because of the death of Mustafa in the series.
As Turks, many of us believe that if Mustafa had been the sultan, the Ottoman state would not have collapsed. After Selim II, who replaced Mustafa, the whole empire collapsed.

Out of all the women in Ottoman History, Mahidevran's story makes me sad more than anyone. Everything that Hurrem got was her right actually, and just because she wasn't clever like Hurrem, she had to live a miserable life full of agony and ignorance. Also, I never liked Selim, but I have to give him some credit for taking care of Mahi during her old age.

Suleiman's treatment of her is baffling, beyond cruelty. She gave him her youth, a Wonderful Prince, no other prince was that famous in Ottoman history proving his competence. As if killing him was not enough, for property ownership, the land and to rule to destiny of people, he cut off her salary as well. In the end, he took nothing in his grave with him, no wealth, no property, no land, no ruling, just the title of a father who killed his child for materialist things. Such a shame, the ottomans were not, never will be Caliphs, they were just rulers with wealth and power, with little or no respect for women. Glad the empire collapsed. Such a medieval mindset.
