“The saw cuts on the push stroke”……., so long as you have installed the blade properly.

And hacksaw blades are consumables. Buy them by the dozen and check that the one you are using is sharp.

I like to use a square or triangular needle file or a saw file to nick the corner. I find it helps to prevent the blade skittering about and lets me cut right on my lines.

That's why some hacksaws have a molded handle on the front end. Those are so nice to use.

“everybody knows how to use a hacksaw, but why do so many people do it wrong?”

**because they don’t know how to use a hacksaw**

EDIT: The amount of people getting triggered by this comment is quite hilarious. (I mean no harm, just a joke) jeez.

I love that you're covering some metal work too! I think it's a natural evolution for woodworkers. Keep it up!

Use the whole length of the blade! I'm sick of picking up hacksaws at work with 2 inches of teeth missing in the middle of the blade.

Most people I see are taking frantic short strokes. Takes longer and wears out the blade in the middle.
If you play the violin 🎻😅 you are taught to use the whole bow. Same principle. No, I don't play the violin, I played the trombone 😅 and I heard the music teacher trying to get the idea across to my colleagues 😅.

I use one probably once a month. Usually cutting bolts or threaded rod. Sometimes restoring stuff requires surgery, too.

I know how to use them correctly, but I can be bad about slipping back into poor form. A nice reminder.

There are multiple ways to use a hacksaw. It is really whatever gets the job done. Like if you are in a tight spot, you might only be able to use one hand.

I've had a little experience using hand saws so I felt like I knew what I was doing more or less, but I was not aware you were supposed to rock with your legs to do the work. Looks a lot easier compared to me doing all the work with my shoulder. Thankfully I don't use these that often, but it's always good to learn something the easy way rather than the hard way

this "rocking my whole upper body with my legs" motion is also my preferred technique for sharpening knives, especially if you have to remove a lot of material. helps you stay real stable.

Try it in a crawl space 2 1/2’ away from the pipe. It’ll give you a new outlook on life

Turns out I did NOT know how to use a hacksaw despite having been a metal worker for like 3 or 4 years. In my defense, I never even saw a hacksaw in any of the machine shops I worked at 😆

Also remember correct blade orientation... it's surprising how many people run their blades backwards

Also often overlooked is the efficiency lost when using short strokes with a saw blade, taking a moment to step back and see how things can be improved makes all the difference. Utilizing more of the blade results in more material removed from your cut, excellent tip regarding using your leg muscles.

As a 30+ yr master electrician before upgrading to a cordless bandsaw I may have used nothing but a hacksaw for a couple decades. Even stainless..not fun. Either way I've never seen any sparky or other tradesman(out of many thousands of master tradesmen)oil a hacksaw. I've also never seen anyone rock with a hacksaw. Nowadays my hands don't fit a hacksaw any longer. A metal cutting bandsaw is a permanent fixture in my tool inventory.

I took welding course beginning in 1978, my German instructor was telling us in his class in the 60's in Germany they spent 4 months learning to use a hacksaw properly.

A really old engineer told me 2 things, cut at a speed that you could maintain all day long, and use as much of the blade as possible, it's about a foot long for a reason.
