DMC-12 Safety Upgrade: Add Turn Signal Functionality to your DeLorean's Side-Marker Lamps

Here's the latest video in the Dave McKeen Electronics Upgrade Series...his Dual Side-Marker Flasher unit will add turn signal indication to your front side-marker lamps. We consider this a safety upgrade as mentioned why in the video.

Now there's a variety of install methods for this but I wanted to be able to show the casual installer how to do it without removing anything like the grille (my grille appears to have been glued on to the fascia). Also, I did not want to remove my front headlight buckets, just the lamps. So if you don't want to take too much apart, and are OK with fishing wires, then this install if for you. However if you can easily remove the grille and headlight buckets without issue then by all means remove them as it will make things much simpler.

From Dave McKeen's website:
The side light blinker will work with LEDs or incandescent bulbs as long as each side light is less than 1.5 amps load. The unit will power the side light on with your normal signal lights and power
the side light off “out of phase with blinker” if you have the parking lights on and the blinker (4 way or directional).

WIRING:
BLACK = ground (connects directly to the Parking Lamp ground lead)
BROWN = parking lights (connects directly to the Parking Lamp 12V lead)
YELLOW = drivers side blinker input (taps into the 12V flasher wire)
BLUE = passenger side blinker input (taps into the 12V flasher wire)
RED = side light power (+12 volts) (wires to the bulb+ socket)
RED = side light power (+12 volts) (wires to the bulb+ socket)
GRAY = drivers side light “ground” (wires to the bulb+ socket)
WHITE = passenger side light “ground” (wires to the bulb+socket)

You cut the side light wires off the harness and wire those side light wires directly to the blinker board. Most likely the cut harness wires will work for the parking light and ground signals needed
for the unit (they did in my video and I wired up BOTH sides in -- I suppose this is optional but I did it anyway).

You tap into the ground, parking light and blinker wires to wire into the blinker board.

If you decide to tie-wrap the unit to something, it’s best to use two tie-wraps near the ends of the heat shrink so you don’t accidentally pull the wires and bend the circuit board. #delorean #backtothefuture #dmc12 #stainlesssteel #cars #autos #customdelorean #dmc #deloreanmotorcompany #deloreantech #deloreango #deloreanindustries #deloreanownersassociation #deloreaneurope #deloreanworld #deloreanmotorcars #prv #lotus #giugiaro #GiorgettoGiugiaro #sportscars #irishcar #exoticcar #deloreanpartsnorthwest #belfast #martymcfly #fluxcapacitor #docbrown #bttf #timemachine #timetravel Disclaimer:

POSI-Taps, are the best quick connect you can make next to soldering, & heat shrink. Far more reliable than the old blue scotch-lock wire taps. Also, I'd RTV/silicone the wires coming out of the module to keep water & corrosion out of that module.... Great video.

Thank you for this. I had one of these, tried to hook it up and fried it somehow. Just ordered another so going to try again after watching this. 😆

Nice video.  I may be ordering the dual side marker flasher from David.  I need to order his fan relay.  Just installed his RPM relay.  You mentioned your grill may be glued to the fascia.  That explains not removing it.  For those that don't know, it's just held in place with 8 ball studs.  A few tugs and it's off.  I like the fact that you tucked the PCB behind the grill.  I would have liked to have seen a side light blinking in alternate flash to the corresponding front blinker when the headlights are on, instead of just the emergency flashers.  Power feed to the blinkers act as an alternate ground with the headlights on.

Is this side blinker still available. If so, where can I get one. I have a 1983 DeLorean and would like to install this side blinker upgrade.

You can remove the grill simply by pulling it from both sides. It snaps in via ball studs into the fascia.
