Its hilarious, becaus everyone else wants to compare you and everyone else will. We are compared not just in our looks but for our skills aswell. Its a thing everyone does but nobody wants to admit they do. It's as if its socially acceptable to do it but not to admit to do so.

Lol I can relate so much. I was pretty much the clever / nerdy guy throughout my childhood and teenage. Until I entered University in Mathematics. Damn I couldn't stand against those geniuses. Not a chance.

People will also use comparison as a means of putting you down. If you.start to stand out in any way, you're more likely to be criticized. Anything to save the normies ego.

If all men looked like the guy on the left of your thumbnail, were at least 6’2” tall, good muscle to fat ratio, had beaucoups resources and borderline world-class level of accomplishment in highly valued fields...

Women would still select out the top 20% as they perceived them. And discard the rest.

"The art example is a pretty silly example" -- yeah, because if you go to an art class nowadays, typically, neither the students nor even the teacher are any good at it. _Especially_ the teacher.

Comparison in the matter of deriving a sense self-worth is idiotic in my opinion, I mean we all do it, sure, but if I was to compare my ability to run against someone else's ability to run, the difference between me and the other persons doesn't really do anything for me. Let's say a certain distance takes me 30 minutes to run, someone else running that same distance faster or slower doesn't help me in anyway - it will still take me 30 minutes to reach the destination, my body does not go any faster if someone else is faster than me. The comparison only matters to some external party, and if you want to please that external party, then it matters to you.
But if you choose the path of solitude, you really have no use for comparing yourself to someone else, you only worry about yourself and take into account your ability to do things and no one else, because you are the only one you have. Someone being better at something does not help me in anyway because that is not something I can directly utilize, it's not a power I have - I can only work with what I've got. Sure I won't be anyone else's first choice, good enough for someone else or whatever, but I don't live for them.

I derive my sense of self-worth from being worth something to myself, and by being better in comparison than I was yesterday (according to my own standards of course i.e. what is useful to me, what benefits me.)
Maybe this is just me, but the less I'm dependent on other people physically, morally, emotionally, mentally, socially etc, the better I feel. Having your sense of self-worth being tied to your utility to others or on the acceptance of others is the polar opposite of this mentality.

We live in a competitive socioeconomic system, and we're being told to not compare ourselves. How does that make any sense?

What we should strive for is not perfection but the achievement of our potential, which is of course limited. We should always make the best out of the cards we were dealt with, then at least can we say that we tried as much as we could. Otherwise if we don't, what's the point?

You'll need to compare yourself to others in any business/job endeavors, because you need to beat out the competition in that environment.

However, you don't need to compare in pretty much every other environment: hobbies, lifestyle, possessions, Facebook posts etc. You don't need to beat out the competition here. As long as you're focusing on yourself and improving yourself, you're going to have a wonderful time in these environments.

When I was younger I was more attracted to individualistic sports, like skateboarding and snowboarding. When I would go out skating with my friends, no one was competing against each other, you were just competing against yourself. Everyone supported you no matter what level you were. If you landed a trick that was new to you, everyone cheered. You compared yourself to others only to get a sense of where you wanted to go.

That is also one reason I have gotten into ultra-running as I have aged (I can't fall on a skateboard and recover like I used to). I'll never be half as fast as the top runners, but my races are against myself (and the cutoffs) and what I believe I can do.

I think you can seek the path of solitude without comparison, but have others support, encourage, help etc along the way.

A few years back, i started to paint miniatures. I had to learn from scratch and practice to improve. There are a lot of tutorials on youtube and a lot of examples and results on reddit. Without comparing myself, i couldn't improve. But i know i can improve by my own on that cathegory. I can't compare my bank account to a millionaire and expect myself to rise at that level. Because to do so i will have to meet the right people and go through a lot of random stuff. I will have to rely on other people's willingness to help me achieve my goals. So it's unfair for me to be too harsh towards myself if i can't achieve this particular goal.
What struck me was the unwillingness of a lot of people to improve their painting and their rejection of constructive criticism. Painting like a todler and being proud of it when the only roadblock you encounter is yourself was something to behold.

I was unaware how much I was comparing myself to others, and even comparing the product of my work to some ideal work product. I see now how much misery that has caused me, and ironically how much it has held me back. Thank you for making me conscious of this. Today I'm going to watch myself, and catch that 'thief'.

It’s called competition. Embrace it bruh. Some stuff you’ll suck at. There will always be someone stronger, faster, better. So what. The solution is consistency.
