In this video guide, Nick Daw, our experienced DOP and RED Epic camera operator, takes us through his thoughts on LED lighting, what is best for film and TV production and why.

Nick describes the two main types of LED lighting: the top end KinoFlos celebs and the cheaper multi LED lite panels.

The issue with LED lite panels are the light sources that cause lots of little shadows that can affect colour temperature. Trying to merge the colour temperature causes imbalances and over-lighting issues. Using diffusion or coloured gels have their own problems too. The effect of trying to counteract these issues means you will probably create another one.

Nick advocates extended use of these KinoFlo Celeb 200's. Their colour temperature ranges from a very warm and cosy 2500k to bright sunny daylight 5600k which means it can be used for most purposes. Nick also talks about the clever electronics used to counteract some of the issues the cheaper LED panels suffer from.

Kino Celebs can have the colour temp, dimming and DMX dialled into their settings. even these settings can have smaller increments set in for smaller percentile increases and decreases. The egg crates and diff frames are so easy to use too.

This piece of kit is a must have for any professional film maker or facility and save a lot of time and money in the long run.
