During Amazon’s Webinar Series on Remote Learning I facilitated a session called Online Instructional Strategies that Just Plain Work Where I discussed methods that are helping students prepare for online learning as well as media creation techniques that can help instructors enhance their digital presence. Throughout this presentation, participants hear from a variety of Wake Tech instructors and students while I model an active online learning environment by delivering a few minutes of content, and then pausing to allow time for reflection and discussion, making sure to use small chunks of content and task switching to engage my online audience. Now we know from research that one of the most powerful assignments Is to have the students become the teachers, so the presentation ends with a challenge. Participants are asked to use their cell phones to record a 20-second or less video that summarizes the lessons learned and then tweet the videos, including #awseducate. While they are working on those lessons, I am able answer questions that were asked during my presentation. As educators across the globe quickly transition to remote learning, we have an opportunity to adopt strategies that can create meaningful and impactful online experiences for all of our diverse learners.
