Becoming a PRODUCER (again) w/ Ableton Live 10 & Ableton Push 2

From age 12-23, I produced all my own records. Granted, it was easy because I was a rapper and didn't have to fuss with melodies and chord progressions (now I'm a singer), but since college I've largely fallen off as a producer...

Now that I'm a singer, and I'm releasing my own records again, it makes sense for me to learn the ins and outs of production using the newest production tools in the market. So, I've begun a journey into learning Ableton Live 10 and using the Ableton Push 2 as a controller...

If you've been interested in producing your own records or getting a better control over your sound, watch this video! It could give you some much needed inspiration.

Hey Kyle, cool video! Thanks for sharing the next steps in your journey to become a full stack creative! About 4 years ago I was tired to hire other professionals (mix/master engineers) to take my production to the next level. I started to journey to learn to produce, mix & master my own music... and last year I produced my own crowdfunded double album, and this feels amazing! Feeelssss soooo damn liberating to be able to produce my own music! Mixing, mastering, producing is no longer 'a secret' art, if you just have the patience & correct resources to make it your own. Finally. Wish you the same, on all levels!

(Outsourced the artwork design, but worked closely with the graphic designer to make it really my own)

TRUST ME YALL.... ABLETON IS THE WAY TO GO!! Especially if you are looking to preform live. You're bang on Kyle and once someone gets over the initial look of ableton cause i know it can look confusing. The sky is the limit!

Hey Kyle! Great video! This really resonates.. I started trying to produce my own songs then lost confidence and thought I’d better leave it to the experts.. but I’ve come full circle and realised that learning to produce myself is well worth the effort because only then can I actually get the songs how I want them! Great to find someone who has had a similar experience 😊🙏👍🤩

Peace to ya Circa! I know exactly what it's like bro. I also wanted to get back going into my production technique, & in the month of February I had challenged myself to a consistency project, where I wrote & produced a new song everyday for the whole month. I only had three guest producers, & that was a REAL challenge but also the most liberating & exciting thing. You can hear the complexity of the beats wax & wane with my steadying proficiency in using my platform of choice (Recommended to me by Henny Tha Bizness), BeatMaker 3 on the iPad. It definitely inspired me to just get in there & create, while also providing me the joyful challenge of discovering different nuances to the platform with each day! I think it all turned out well in the end, I turned it into an album. Ha! 😆👌🏾

Akai was the manufacturer that produced the push 1 I believe

Will you make a series of this? That'd be cool. I have AL 10 and a Push 2 also, and it would be great to grow along with you.

Hey Circa! I'm wondering if you have a video or any knowledge on using sample pads live. Or maybe you know of a good video for me (i've been searching). Basically, I'm an acoustic artist, but want to add more production to my live show. I've toured with an artist in the past who was also acoustic, but implemented a looper as well as a sampler running through his laptop to trigger loops and sounds. I assume this was through Abelton. I figured it anyone knew where to get more info on this it'd be you. Most of the videos I find are guys just using the sampler live on it's own.

I can relate to most of the comments here, especially about giving up, which I did in the 90's when DAWs were basics, sound cards were rather unreliable and making MIDI beats was time consuming. I decided to give it another go ten years ago when I bought Logic 8 and I am glad that I did. One of the best things I have "discovered" was the Apple Loops library that came with Logic and gave me the flexibility to put down a backing track very quickly. I realised that if I wanted to own the entire process, from song-writing to release, I would have to master the tool of the trade = DAW. What made it easier is that I had some formal training in sound engineering and I LOVE production!
In summary, go for it no matter the DAW of choice!

As an old fart, I came up composing on the grid using Cakewalk for DOS with external synths (finally moved to a Windows version for the last couple of years I was working, but still basic grid/piano roll style). Then life happened and I fell out of it for a very long time, and so like you I'm now in a re-learning phase trying to get to know the moden tools. So far I've just been using Reaper and going back to the same grid style composing, but I do find myself drawn to the possibility that there might be a better workflow out there. I think I need to at least try Ableton (and maybe Bitwig?) sometime.
