Carlos Lago from Edmunds compares two of the biggest and most capable family SUVs on sale today. In this video, Carlos evaluates the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and the 2021 Ford Expedition, comparing pricing, interiors, cargo space, driving impressions and more. Join us for this full-size 3-row family SUV comparison test and find out which of these family haulers is the right fit for you and your lifestyle.

Redesigned for 2021, the Chevy Tahoe (and its long-wheelbase Suburban counterpart) offers the comfort, capability and convenience we've come to expect from a large SUV. Chevrolet upped the legroom for 2021 and added an independent rear suspension that gives the Tahoe more comfort over bumps. Inside the cabin, the Tahoe offers plenty of charging ports and a large touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

The 2021 Expedition is Edmunds' top-ranked large SUV. The Expedition has an attractive exterior design and can be outfitted with all the features and toys you'd expect. As Ford's largest SUV offering, the Expedition (and its long-wheelbase XL variant) has a limousine-like interior that can comfortably seat eight people. Perfect for shuffling half the soccer team to practice.

Full-size family SUVs have become all the rage over the past decade. The Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe are two of the most popular and top-rated full-size SUVs for families looking for that third row, extra cargo space and strong towing capabilities. But which full-size SUV is right for you and your family? We answer that question and more. It's the 2021 Chevy Tahoe vs. the 2021 Ford Expedition in our full-size 3-row family SUV comparison test.

As someone who normally rents a suburban when in the US (I’m in U.K.) Last month the Chevy wasn’t available so they gave me the expedition, found the luggage for 5 just fit and just but the comfort for 5 upfront was perfect. I drove 4620 miles from SFO via Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada and back up highway 1. The thing I noticed was the excellent fuel economy. The next time I’m lucky enough to visit your great country it’ll be the expedition again.

With the second row moving forward thingy, the key point to note is that in the expedition, you can move the seat forward even when there is a child seat hooked up. That is an important thing if you use the third row often..

Having worked at GM and Ford dealerships as, not a sales person, but a product specialist, I can say confidently that Ford makes a better product. It’s not even close.

The height of the 2nd and 3rd row seats is more on the Expedition, thus making it more comfortable for longer trips and bigger people.
Even if leg room is comparable, the height of the seats makes a big difference in comfort. The Expedition is superior in this regard.

With the expedition it feels like you’re driving on air! Nice and simple comfortable interior…
The Tahoe has flash and styling … but if you’re on a road trip it’s Expedition - King of the road!
Just sit back… relax … and enjoy that ride!

Great review! Another thing I think worth mentioning… The Expedition has an aluminum body. No rust from winter road salt in the north country.

I feel that both suvs are best in their category, I would personally take the Tahoe because of the 6.2 but the eco boost is a beast too

The Expedition Platinum has massaging seats where the Tahoe does not. This helps a ton on long rides!

Thank you for your excellent review.

I own a 1999 Tahoe LS. I bought it brand new (ordered it from the factory). It’s been a great vehicle but is now 23 years old and has 236, 500 miles on it. Because of its age and high mileage, I decided to rent an SUV for a recent 5, 000 mile road trip with friends around the southwest starting in Denver and ending in Tucson. Hertz gave me a 2023 Ford Expedition. Wow, I was very impressed with its performance and gas mileage. I got between 19-24 mpg (amazing for a huge, full size SUV). It’s handling was solid, and responsive. It was very roomy with plenty of interior space for our luggage and gear. A very nice vehicle!

I’m now looking to replace my old Tahoe, and may go with an Expedition. But before I make any purchase, I’d like to at least test drive a new Tahoe - though so far, there aren’t any in stock.

Again, thank you.

Expedition all day long .... better drive, quicker acceleration, better towing capacity, better fuel economy, more room in the third row, using the flip up tray more storage space in the rear with the third row up and frankly better looking (I guess the last one is subjective).

Hey Carlos! I've been watching you for years & you're aging beautifully like the Motorweek guy.

This review was absolutely outstanding! I told myself..."I'm not about to watch a 20 minute video at 1 o'clock am"... Now I'm writing a comment...🤦🏾‍♂️..lol Job well done! Unfortunately, this video was like an evenly match tug of war which left me slightly undecided...🤷🏾‍♂️...but I will say I'm leaning toward that boss Chevy. I had a 2017 Chevy Tahoe LTZ and it was perfect. My wife talks about that vehicle more than she talks about me...😂

I bought the 2021 Tahoe High Country last year - I have put 53, 000 miles on it already- no issues whatsoever, best vehicle ever made period ! Comfort, looks, plenty of power ( 420 HP) , quiet, great off-road capability, handling ….there is NOTHING I can think of as far as criticism . I’ve owned Range Rovers, Beemers, Mercedes and Ford this beats them all !

Geez - GMC should pay me for this !! 🤣🤣

Here i am with a 2011 Tahoe with 171, 000 miles on it, and it is still going on strong.

That push button shifter is a deal killer for me. I'm not a big fan of rotary shifters, like on the Expedition, but they are far superior to push button shifters.

Seems to me like the Chevy Tahoe is trying to get their people with gimmicks. The expedition just is what it is and it doesn’t lie to you, and it doesn’t seem to be afraid to do the work.

I have been a Toyota guy for many years and I have never owned a Ford until this year, and they made a believer out of me. I quit buying or even looking at any thing GM when they took the Government buyout back in 2009.
