The word your looking for is “future proofing”. It’s when something is designed with the potential to withstand future events. In the case of Hex Bugs, the habitats were future proofed with the inclusion of attachment points for potential future additions.

I was gifted this in a clear bag with no instructions from another mom and I had no idea what she’d given me. My 4 and 5 year olds started tinkering and ended up building it and we were amazed. I still couldn’t figure out what it was supposed to do and the internet brought me here. This video was awesome lol thank you!!!!

You just brought back a core memory from childhood.

Taking the "autonomous robot" line even further, I remember the Hexbug line where they made them able to be equipped for battle was SICK. It basically made them bigger and gave them slots for *customizable WEAPONS* that would jitter and spin, and so it was like you were basically equipping your own gladiator to duel another person's! You couldn't control them directly, but kid me enjoyed decking mine out with helicopter blades and "training" it to duel other kids'

"You know what doesn't eat its entire family? 👏🏻 Robots."

That ONE anthology episode of Samurai Jack begs to differ.

The one time I got to play with Hexbugs, I was enthralled. I wanted to build a massive habitat, taller than me, with hundreds of the little things in it, like an actual full-blown insect hive. Of course, I was like 8, I didn't have that kind of money, but I looked at them on the shelves and dreamed.
Went back to Lego soon after, but I actually had Lego. I only got to play with Hexbugs cos I was at a friend's house

I was prepared to hear about how this piece of my childhood was terrible in every way, but I was pleasantly surprised. I never owned Hexbugs as a kid, but always wanted to, and it makes me happy to see my childhood fantasies were well worth it

Love this would love a deeper dive into the other hex bug stuff like the different robots like the beetle line and the crab and spider types too.

I haven’t watched the whole video but Hexbugs are one of the best cat toys in the world. Cats love watching and knocking them around

fun fact. hexbug now adays stil go with bug based sets with rc red ants, micro ant, and rc battle tarantulas. they also dip into more non insectoid ideas. junkbots, dragons, and even liscensed stuff with discovy channels show battlebots which just got a new set with now rechargable batteries(others needed three trip a batteries to work with a controller they included)

This is not what I expected but I remember getting these as a gift and LOVING them I had the hive thing and all that. Also one day someone came to our school who was an engineer and gave EVERYONE a hexbug! Ahh memories :)

I would totally care about you covering more of the Hexbug stuff. Not just the Nanos, but also the bigger robots too.

I'd like to see a "first years vs recent years" analysis video! Also it's nice seeing you add clips of past advertisements or packaging (ex: the hexbug pattern checklist). Kinda gives nostalgia, kinda helps understand the direction products and their marketing went over the years

Ohhh my gosh the nostalgia wave! The sets were so cool! Especially the construction set, which gave you cells that you could remove the walls off of, and make your own Hive habitat sets, complete with pillars to make multiple stories with!
The only issue I ever took with them is that the spiral elevators were always a bit too heavy and prone to falling over.

Damn, talk about nostalgia lol. I still vividly remember getting a used Hexbug habitat set with extra Hexbugs a long time ago in a garage sale. I still remember the guy telling me to take good care of his bugs. Made me realize how it didn’t matter how old you are to enjoy these type of things.

How hard would it honestly be to make “bristles” that snap onto the backs of the first gen?
