I definitely agree that you should only collect what you will genuinely enjoy. Love vintage with the nostalgia it has for me but also love modern because the art really has improved over sets. Both have pros and cons

Vintage pokemon cards is so much nostalgica for 90s kids. I have memories tied to the pictures on those cards :)

Look up "Pokémania" and you'll understand how big Pokemon was at that time. Most millennials will have a strong attachment with WOTC cards and witnessed the golden era of Pokemon in the late '90s. The movies, the games, the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokemon - it was massive HUGE back then! Gen 3 is when Pokemon lost it's attraction as most 90's kids were hitting their teenage years and had the mindset of growing up,

Grew up with base set, jungle and fossil and even with all the connection and nostalgia i have for that era I still can see the age of Vintage being king is ending. To be an investor you need to be flexible and willing to adapt over time. If people can't get over their own bias and shift their mindset to see things through the eyes of the new masses of collectors and investors and what they prefer than they run the risk of being left behind. Again these are all opinions. Great video as always Eva!

O ya and if anyone is a strick collector only don't listen to anyone and buy what make you happy and enjoy it!!

Eva, you rock. I think there doesn’t need to be any argument between Vintage and Modern and the existence of both exemplifies the depth of Pokemon as a hobby. I say welcome all, including the rainbow, CGI and plasticine lovers. Its appeal to kids may ensure an ever lasting presence. Who can forget the players of the TCG. It’s such a rad card game to play online or tabletop. It spans such diverse media platforms.

Bottom line, it’s what you make it and we’re given so many ways to make it good for us, like with the choice of vintage and modern . Why begrudge that?

I completely agree with you. You do you!! Don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Nostalgia speaks to all of us in many different ways.

I grew up in the 90s and love base set cards, but I personally think it's refreshing to see others grow up with modern cards and can still love pokemon. I came back to the hobby last year with Celebrations and found enjoyment out of the newer cards (e.g. alt art, full art). Please don't mind all the other curmudgeons who think vintage is supreme. They are just a little insecure. Love your ending comments that we are just collecting shiny cardboards. Why not just enjoy, socialize and connect over the passion of this hobby ✨🤩

Yes being 35 I certainly tend to value the old stuff more. Part of that is that we played multiple games with that set of pokemon in it, watched the show on occasion, so those early sets were heavily instilled in us. Even the new cards of vintage pokemon are still my favorites. I also feel like the oldest of any collectible item is always the "best" in that its going to be the most rare so more valuable.
That being said I LOVE the modern card direction they have taken (for the most part..) especially the full art trainers, gallery cards and what not. The art is the best part of the cards so i just love how many awesome art cards there are now. I also love the texture of these new cards, it makes them feel more complicated and the visual effect is really good. So my instinct to jump on a card does get triggered by vintage, but I still buy and love the new stuff

Modern good. Vintage good. Pokémon good.

One weird thing Pokémon has going on is that the earliest stuff isn't the rarest as it is with Magic and many other collectibles. Alpha magic is both the first and the rarest so has both things going for it, history and rarity/scarcity. Pokémon demand and therefore print runs are like a big U. Massive out of the gate, lull in the middle and currently massive again. The most historic stuff just don't have the absolute rarity and that hurts it. Still think long term there are good value plays across the board and great collector value everywhere as well.

i grew up with base set & neo, went away, and came back to original ex era and left again for a while - came back during SWSH. i can appreciate the original base set etc and love the art, but i collect cards based on the art, and i feel that the art has improved so much in modern. lt. surge's pikachu is one of my favourite vintage cards because of the sunset - but modern cards like eeveelution alt arts, dialga/palkia alt arts, japan post promos, munch retrospective cards - they're works of art!

Wotc definitely imprinted on me but id say other factors drove that nostalgia to the extremes held today. The gameboy red, blue, yellow games as well as the anime and toys was magical. The playing and collecting of those cards specifically are just physical staples of those memories for me personally. I think many can relate in some fashion that was apart of that specific era. When you started Ava, it was a different time for the hobby.

Agree. I collect singles, and invest in sealed, and for both, just buy what I like at the price I can accept. It's a hobby after all!

The only Pokémon items I have sold/thought about selling now/in the near future, are ones that I have a decent amount of duplicates of… the rest are safely tucked away for the long-haul investment, or displayed. You could definitely make yourself go crazy, if you constantly look-up prices of your collection… same definitely goes for certain stocks… I have some lower-risk mutual fund stocks that I have left to mature, and while they have had their ups and downs, letting it ride has been very lucrative, and I’ve decided to act like I don’t even have them, so I don’t worry about the ups and downs along the way. Keep-up the great content! You are very wise, regardless of your age, Eva! ✌️

When I stopped collecting back in the day it was probably 2001-2002🤷🏻‍♂️…
Going in to middle school and starting sports I stopped paying attention to any Pokémon sets still releasing, and playing the games! I had no idea E series, gold stars and shining cards would do what they did… nor did I care then lol.
Even the sets released just 6-7 years ago are easily becoming “vintage” and expensive now! I’m glad I’m getting back into it when I am :)

So i agree people should collect what they like. Everyone is different and like different types or set, cards, whatever that may be. Having said that looking a pure value, anything vintage and graded or sealed is worth big bucks. Modern sets will be worth money down the road aswell as certain chase cards in sets. Take Skyridge for example, sealed booster packs are well over a 1, 000 dollars with a sealed booster box going for over 50, 000. For me i started only buying graded slabs unless i can get a really good deal.

I started collecting around ultra prism because the kid at work had cards, I’m 29 and everyone but me had cards when I was a kid. (Turns out the kid at work had fake cards). I decided ultimately to play with my cards rather than keep them in a binder. Now I collect for gameplay purposes - but I collect all rarities, based off centering, to have all four variants in my deck. I have no interest in vintage expect to experience the old gameplay. - I can see vintage cards any time I want at my friends house. - I don’t believe in slabbing either although I have two “test slabs”. I do collect expensive cards because I want to play with them the way they are supposed to be. - So far I am still building all my decks - I watch competitive YouTubers and try to get cards they show off that are fun or strong - for that they are priceless.

I have been playing and collecting since base set 2 came out so I'm all about the vintage. I started with the card game and then the video games.

For me, I do have a very fond place in my heart during the WotC era. It introduced me to card games as a hobby to play. I love the old sets but it is not something that I want to put my money in. I think it is just out of my range for it to be just a fun hobby. Since I like the Pokemon as a franchise as a whole, I do like modern cards. I like and respect all generations.

I equate this to the NBA. There are the Superstars and Legends of old that are the pillars that created the NBA we see today. However, they are two different things. It's not an either thing, its more of an and/or type of thing. There are Superstars and Legends in the making in the NBA today. Pokemon is the same thing, it keeps building on top of each other, not replacing the past.

Michael Jordan or Lebron James. Charizard or Umbreon or Greninja. Why can't we just appreciate what they all brought to the table. Just like with the NBA, I am just going to appreciate the now but remember the past. I'm tired of hate watching basketball. I'm tired of hearing why one niche in the Pokemon hobby is better than the other. It's just a debate on why one is more successful in the other. Why? They are both successful. In the end, we are just buying cardboard anyway.

I enjoy collecting vintage since that's what I grew up with back in 98/99. it's true that you simply need to enjoy what you are collecting. Even the modern will be vintage one day if you can hold onto it for many years. The only thing I don't like to see is people deliberately driving up or trying to drive up the value of something because they want to make a quick buck. Vintage is time tested and should be higher value by now but I don't think modern should be hundreds/thousands of dollars until a longer period of time has elapsed.
