Hey everyone! After my A7III vs A7IV video, you asked me to also compare the Sony A7C vs A7IV. We are checking out the camera build and ergonomics, comparing the image quality and dynamic range in Lightroom, comparing the A7C vs A7IV colours + resolution. I also have Sony A7C vs A7IV eye AF comparisons, I share side by side 4K 50p video footage, we check out how these cameras go for vlogging and compare IBIS, skintones/colours, rolling shutter and audio. Let me know what you think of both camera bodies in the comments!

I love my A7c. It pays to mention you can reach 1/8000 shutter speed if you switch to silent shutter mode.

The A7c has greatly exceeded my expectations as a travel/everyday camera, and paired with the Samyang 35mm f/2.8 makes for the lightest full frame option out there.

the way she differentiated each camera in a simpler way is the best, she did not had to really say all the technical aspects of each model. great job Julia! because of that, I am now gonna get the a7c because I am not a pro and just need a good camera that I can bring daily for content creation. I do not even need to do pro work.

I'm 6'1 and I find the A7C plenty comfortable, I'm admittedly not shooting continuously for hours. I mainly use my camera for family and travel photography and it was a perfect transition from my Fuji X100. I really stayed away from FF cameras because they always just felt so big and cumbersome. The A7C is just a slightly heavier APS-C body but with the advantage of Sony's incredible FF glass. I mostly have it paired with the 24 1.4 GM and 85mm 1.8 and I can fit these both in a Hex mini ranger cross body. It really is in my opinion the best compromise for hobbyists looking for a great walk around camera. Is the A7IV a "better" camera...sure. Is it the best camera for me though, no I don't think so.

Sold A7C and got A7IV - no regrets. Finally, workable APS-C mode if needed. Dual card, 10 bit, WAY better autofocus, Active Stab, Dedicated switch between Stills and Movies for run-and-gun shoots. And the list is going on.

I have both A7r4 and A7C mainly for photography. Somehow I pick A7C much more often 😊

If you have A7c, do remember to update the firmware. Sony has brought down some features from A7IV to A7c, such as animal eye AF in video and USB streaming, so there is even less reason to upgrade to A7IV. Despite having similar spec with A7iii on paper, the autofocus on A7c is a noticable step up, there is not much between A7c and A7IV. All that convince me that there is a more optimised and powerful processor in A7c when compare to A7iii.

I use the a7c as my second body to the a7r4 for work. And with vintage lenses for street photography, it's a amazing size for full frame.

The A7c is honestly my favorite camera I've owned. I was nervous about giving up external dials, but there are plenty of options for custom setup to overcome that. With a smaller lens (I prefer the 35/2.8 ZA), it's just a hair bigger than pocketable. I head out the door with it every day.

Something of an aside worth mentioning- vintage lenses. The A7c is so awesome for adapting old lenses. They're typically much smaller than today's offerings, so pairing them with the A7c form factor makes for an absolutely perfect shooting experience. Focus peaking + magnify + ISO performance.. it's a manual super powered setup.

A7C for me because it's most likely to be carried with me when traveling.

Great comparison video, and I know it's meant to be quick, but I think quite a few important differences were missed. As Julia said, the a7c does have fewer designated custom buttons, but there are still several buttons you can customize. The big difference is in the number of dials. The a7c has two (if you count the back dial) plus an EV dial. the a7IV has three dials plus and a customizable EV dial for a total of four dials. As a manual shooter the EV dials on my a7c and a7sIII see little action, and I'd love to be able to have them control white balance instead. The mode dial on the a7IV is better as well, allowing you to have separate camera settings for video and photos. Switching between video and photo modes on the a7c affects the settings on both modes, which is a real pain. Also the menu system on the a7IV is much better than the a7c, and uses touch navigation.

The a7c has characteristics that suit me better personally. As a left-eye shooter I prefer the rangefinder body. Also while the grip is shallower, I find it to be more comfortable, secure, and stable with a handstrap than the a7sIII/a7IV style body without one. The a7c is a great, less expensive option if you don't need any of the specific features of the a7IV and are planning to use the smaller f1.8 or f2.8 primes or f4 zooms. The a7c is a good choice for someone jumping from aps-c bodies to full frame, but the a7IV may be better suited for people upgrading from an older full frame camera.

This was a great comparison. I was leaning towards the A7C up until about a week ago and am now considering the A7IV. The A7C is 2 years older, and since the price has not changed much since it was introduced, it seems likes the A7IV for the additional $$ os a more future proof camera with the updated sensor, true touch screen, dual slot and better hold especially with longer telephoto lenses.

This was excellent, Julia and really, the first time I have ever felt that, hmm, maybe I should consider the a7iv! I have the a7c which I love using so much that my a7iii is not getting any use these days! I really appreciate the fact that you are 'listening'' to your viewers and responding to their requests. Thank you ( and to Dan, as well!)

I have the a7iii and the A7riii and I’m still proud of using both of them. I even have a long shutter count life on it and both of those cameras fulfilled my needs

I thought I would love the A7C for the compact size, but for me it just didn’t feel right. The grip was uncomfortable and I have pretty small hands, the viewfinder was very limiting and I really missed that front dial. The worst thing, I found was unless you were only buying really small lenses everything else looked and felt really off balance. I have traded it in and just bought an A7iv which immediately felt loads better. An expensive mistake, but we live and learn 🤦🏼‍♀️

The A7C vlog footage looks excellent. Reminded me that vlogging was one of the reasons I bought the camera but haven't gotten around to it because shooting everything else is just so fun.

I have both cameras but admittedly am more excited about shooting with my a7c
