Serotonin and Melatonin Synthesis | Tryptophan Metabolism

Показать описание
Lesson on Serotonin and Melatonin Synthesis from the amino acid Tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, which is used to produce the monoamine neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin. Serotonin is important in regulation of mood, appetite and sleep in the central nervous system, whereas melatonin is produced in the pineal gland and is important in regulating circadian rhythms. In the process of converting tryptophan into serotonin and melatonin, several important cofactors are used including tetrahydrobiopterin, s-adenosyl methionine (SAM), and co-enzyme A. Vitamins B5 and B6 are also required for serotonin and melatonin synthesis.

this is fantastic!! thank you so much, after years of being in traditional medicine, I am now learning more about functional medicine. I love it, it totally makes sense.

I recommend to improve the quality such video, is to mention the location of all these enzymes, namely Cytosolic, and for added clarity you also can mention the gene symbols of the enzymes, so the viewer can go and search for them better. Enzymes gene symbols are: TPH1 orTPH2 then DDC then AANAT then finally ASMT all are cytosolic, then the product which is either Serotonin or Melatonin will go to Vesicles via special channels like VMAT2
Thanks for the video

Feedback: compared to your video on Catecholamine synthesis, the thingy (the grps added/removed) you wrote on right hand side of your last slide ( 9:47 ) felt redundant (not needed) cz uve already written same thing (the rxns like hydroxylation, decarboxylation, acetylation) on left side. And the grps being added or removed u wrote on right side could be confused with the cofactors on their left side.

Anyways, SUPERLOVED BOTH OF YOUR VIDEOS, pls keep the great thing up, you're doing a fantastic job

Error was not citing the production of melatonin in the gut for bacteria and produced for mitochondria.... Not just for sleep... Thought the body. To stop at sleep is a narrow statement

Did you know this? - Glyphosate (aka Roundup, herbicide) suppresses a plant enzyme EPSPSthat plants need to synthesize tryptophane and phenylalanine, as well as tyrosine, leading to the death of the plant. But also: These three amino acids, forming the aromatic group of the amino acids are essential for the production of serotonin, dopamine, and melatonine.
Just saying.
(Now I would like to know how much decades of use of glyphosate have influenced the physiology of the plants we eat, and what this might mean for the mental health of humanity ).

Great video JJ! How long does this process take? Like if I took some tryptophan how long would it be before I had melatonin and serotonin in my brain?

Hello, very interesting video as usual, thank you very much!
When it comes to light, do you know which step does it block for melatonin synthesis ?
