A Houston Podiatrist's Honest Review of the New Sketchers Slip-Ins

Every day at home, I get on my kids' case when they slip their shoes on without untying them. Then, at my Houston podiatry office, I get on the cases of kids and adults for doing the same thing. My name is Dr. Andrew Schneider and I'm a podiatrist in Houston, TX. I've been seeing commercials for a new shoe by Skechers called the Slip Ins. They're designed to just slip into them without having to tie them.

I can envision Skecher's headquarters where they do their research and development. They must think about what they can come out with next to aggravate podiatrists. First came the rocker sole Shape Up shoes that they touted as being good to build up your rear end. Then came the boggy Memory Foam Insoles, which lets you sink into your shoes.

Now, Skechers is advertising they're Slip-ins. Shoes that are designed for you to just step right into them. You don't need to hold it. You don't need to untie or tie them. You just walk right into the shoe. I also watched the commercials. After I finished rolling my eyes, I did some more research to learn about these shoes.

Let me start by saying I don't usually recommend Skechers to my patients. Some like them because they're lightweight. That's true, but most don't have any significant support. They do make some good shoes. In fact, there was a nice article about Skechers in a recent issue of Runner's World. But those aren't the shoes that most people get or think of with Skechers.

Let's talk about these new Slip-In shoes. First of all, it's important to discuss why it's best to wear a shoe that have laces and why you should tie your shoes each time you put them on, rather than slipping into them. The purpose of getting shoes that fit properly is to ensure that your feet are well-supported and protected. When you keep your shoe laced and just slip your foot in, it eliminates the snug fit of your shoe. In fact, your foot moves independently inside your shoe. When your foot moves around in your shoe, there is less support putting you at greater risk of injury. That's because your feet are forced to work more and harder as you walk.

So, now we introduce a shoe that's designed specifically to slip into. Hands-free, no less. Right off the bat, you're going to have less support and a looser fit of the shoe that already puts you at a disadvantage. You certainly should not do any exercise or athletics in this shoe since your foot will not be secure within it.

There are some positives, however. First of all, there's a reinforced heel counter that won't bend when you slip the shoes on. This prevents the back of the shoe from deforming. The material from the shoe upper is elastic, which allows this shoe to stretch. When accommodating your foot. When you slip on a conventional shoe, the heel counter ends up bending and limits the support. So, if you are going to slip on your shoes, you should consider purchasing one designed to be used this way.

Is there anyone who should wear the Skecher Slip-Ins? They definitely do have a place. Some people have difficulty bending over to put on their shoes. Others can get their shoes on but can't lace them. These shoes would be perfect for them since they can just step into the shoes. After a hip replacement, it's advised not to bend over, making it difficult to put on your shoes. In these cases, again, these Skechers will fit the bill. In fact, I'll even recommend them to these patients to make it easier for them to get their shoes on and to be more mobile.

As a podiatrist, I generally don't recommend Skechers for active people. These Slip-In shoes intrigued me when I saw the commercial, and they definitely have their place. It's just not as widespread a solution as the company would like them to be.

My boss who is 68 and weighs about 350 pounds got done of these and raves about them. He said they are very supportive and he can get them in without all the struggle. These will be life changing for my 72 year old friend who cant put her shoes in at all without help.

I just checked out these shoes in the store today as an potential solution for my father-in-law who has Parkinson's and has difficulty with tying laces AND balance. My wife came across this video which reinforced the decision to get him a pair. Did I mention, that I AM A PODIATRIST, too? Great, honest review, Dr. Schneider and THANK YOU for having my back!!!

Slip-ins are life saver for me after my cervical spine surgery. I bought 3 pairs. They are very comfortable for me daily walking exercise. I'm staying with them for a while.

I stumbled across this new shoe design at a Sketchers Outlet Store while travelling a couple of months ago and purchased a pair of the Go Walk style slip-ins. They are one of the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned and are very light. After walking around Disneyland and a Barret-Jackson auction site, at over 15, 000 steps each day, my feet were about the only thing not really sore! I was so impressed with them that I bought another pair to wear as indoor shoes at home.

From your comments, I am not sure you actually tested a pair before submitting your review. I tried the various styles and there were varying amounts of support and comfort from the different models. The higher prized versions did seem to offer improved support and comfort. Granted, they do not fit as tight as a securely tied regular shoe, but I do not think my feet are moving around inside them any more than my lace up shoes, at the tension that I typically keep them tied up at. I would not recommend them for sports per say, but for normal, everyday use, they are a winner in my books! Plus the ease of putting them on without bending over or while having something in your hands is a huge plus for me. I never feel they are at risk of falling off, even at a light running pace. For anyone having difficulty with putting their shoes on, I would highly recommend them but make sure you try the various styles and find the ones that suit you best.

This is a fair, balanced review. Dr. Schneider points out some of the downsides while explaining they’re a good choice for some people. People like me. I was having so much trouble getting shoes on that I stopped wearing them opting instead for Ugg slippers in the cool weather and sandals in the summer. Not too safe for someone with mobility issues. I feel much more confident on my feet now that I’m wearing slip in shoes.

I just bought a pair with laces, so that I can slip into them when I want convenience and re-tie the laces when I want to adjust the fit. I was impressed when I tried them in the store - the construction of the heel is very clever and comfortable. I think Skechers has come up with a real innovation here. But I have just bought them. Let's see how they go on the streets!

Glad I found this channel. These were just advertised on television and I was thinking I really need to do some research before I plunk down $75. This really cleared up my questions and was a very very good review. Thank you so much.

I love my Xero barefoot shoes, not slip on, not washable, but walking with no support and a wide toe box has actually helped relieve my back pain. I also love being bareroot.

Loved this information. My mother in law just had neck surgery twice within a month span . She lost some nerve feeling in some of her fingers . She’s not allowed to bend plus she has other underlying conditions. She’s not very mobile so the slip on would be great . Thank you for your review. Helped me to determine buying a pair for her . I hate seeing her in slip on shoes for Example Crocs, although their nice but provide no snuggness to her feet

Thank You for the honest review! I have Congestive Heart Failure, which causes my feet and ankles to swell to the point I have not been able to wear shoes for close to a year. With this water retention, it also limits my ability to bend over- I am going to check into getting some of these, as I feel I am a good candidate for them. I wonder if they come in size 14 triple wide? I will, however, make sure that they are comfortable and safe for me, otherwise it's a No Go!

I bought Skechers slip ins a couple months ago and they were comfortable at firs but I know have problems with my feet hurting from wearing them. My back heal hurts and bottom of time feet have pain so I’m basically limping now. I also developed callus on the side of my baby toe as well. I wouldn’t recommend for all day wear. Couple hours at most .

I had an accident at work recently. I wound up with a fractured tibia, and torn acl. I went from a straight leg brace to a T bar brace. The shoes that I had were very uncomfortable (not to mention that I am flat footed. I went to the shoe store today, and they had these displayed. I tried them on. ABSOLUTELY nothing to complain about from myself. It was a painful struggle getting my old kicks on, where these are effortless. If you had a limited leg injury, I would refer them to these sneakers. $70 was alot to me for some I'd make the purchase again without hesitation. Great video and review

Thank you for this very informative video. I was thinking about getting some slip ones but you convinced me that I’m not ready for them. I’m in good health and can put my shoes on and tie the laces. Maybe as I get older I’m 71 right now. I might consider buying some if I’m having trouble lacing my shoes. Thanks again. 😁👍🏽

I appreciate your comments. My podiatrist recommends ASICS for my situation with plantar fasciitis. I was hooked in my Sketchers marketing last week and purchased my first Slip Ins Arch Support. They are lace up ship ins, and I love them. I meant for these to be for walking or standing for work or everyday errands and dog walks. I wouldn’t use for exercise. Also, for my 96 year old mom, I’m going to get slip ins for ease of dressing her by me or the caregiver.
