Every day at home, I get on my kids' case when they slip their shoes on without untying them. Then, at my Houston podiatry office, I get on the cases of kids and adults for doing the same thing. My name is Dr. Andrew Schneider and I'm a podiatrist in Houston, TX. I've been seeing commercials for a new shoe by Skechers called the Slip Ins. They're designed to just slip into them without having to tie them.
I can envision Skecher's headquarters where they do their research and development. They must think about what they can come out with next to aggravate podiatrists. First came the rocker sole Shape Up shoes that they touted as being good to build up your rear end. Then came the boggy Memory Foam Insoles, which lets you sink into your shoes.
Now, Skechers is advertising they're Slip-ins. Shoes that are designed for you to just step right into them. You don't need to hold it. You don't need to untie or tie them. You just walk right into the shoe. I also watched the commercials. After I finished rolling my eyes, I did some more research to learn about these shoes.
Let me start by saying I don't usually recommend Skechers to my patients. Some like them because they're lightweight. That's true, but most don't have any significant support. They do make some good shoes. In fact, there was a nice article about Skechers in a recent issue of Runner's World. But those aren't the shoes that most people get or think of with Skechers.
Let's talk about these new Slip-In shoes. First of all, it's important to discuss why it's best to wear a shoe that have laces and why you should tie your shoes each time you put them on, rather than slipping into them. The purpose of getting shoes that fit properly is to ensure that your feet are well-supported and protected. When you keep your shoe laced and just slip your foot in, it eliminates the snug fit of your shoe. In fact, your foot moves independently inside your shoe. When your foot moves around in your shoe, there is less support putting you at greater risk of injury. That's because your feet are forced to work more and harder as you walk.
So, now we introduce a shoe that's designed specifically to slip into. Hands-free, no less. Right off the bat, you're going to have less support and a looser fit of the shoe that already puts you at a disadvantage. You certainly should not do any exercise or athletics in this shoe since your foot will not be secure within it.
There are some positives, however. First of all, there's a reinforced heel counter that won't bend when you slip the shoes on. This prevents the back of the shoe from deforming. The material from the shoe upper is elastic, which allows this shoe to stretch. When accommodating your foot. When you slip on a conventional shoe, the heel counter ends up bending and limits the support. So, if you are going to slip on your shoes, you should consider purchasing one designed to be used this way.
Is there anyone who should wear the Skecher Slip-Ins? They definitely do have a place. Some people have difficulty bending over to put on their shoes. Others can get their shoes on but can't lace them. These shoes would be perfect for them since they can just step into the shoes. After a hip replacement, it's advised not to bend over, making it difficult to put on your shoes. In these cases, again, these Skechers will fit the bill. In fact, I'll even recommend them to these patients to make it easier for them to get their shoes on and to be more mobile.
As a podiatrist, I generally don't recommend Skechers for active people. These Slip-In shoes intrigued me when I saw the commercial, and they definitely have their place. It's just not as widespread a solution as the company would like them to be.
