This is a build and somewhat of a review of Revell's new 1:48 Scale SR-71 Blackbird. I mostly built this model out of the box but I used a couple extra things:

“I wish all decals made me happy.” Truer words were never spoken. Beautiful work.

Got the Revell 1/48 SR-71 & HpH XB-70 a few month ago the feeling when the shop owner ascend the ladder to retrieve both of the model kits was something I not felt in a long time.

G'day MAM, Possibly the most impressive 'hard work' SR-71 outer skin paint job I've ever seen. Outstanding. So too with the complex alloy-metals heat mark colouring. I specialise in larger scale aircraft, mostly from WW2 to Korea ending before most military aircraft morphed into various shades of tedious grey; most uninspiring but, I guess the best high altitude camouflage anyone's come up with yet, given that most camo schemes down through the years were a total failure, perhaps only ever helped by nightfall or terrible daytime weather.
Much prefer the days when pilots saw lots of fighters with 'yellow noses' they knew they were, generally, up against a mess of ME 109s and that little fighters with bright yellow rings around the roundels meant you were dealing with the RAF of one of their 'foreign squadrons'.
My air force, the RAAF, had several bad days, in WW2, when inexperienced USAAF pilots shot ours down because we, like the RAF, had a red centre circle in our roundels which were taken to mean Japanese opponents. The entire RAAF force, south of the equator, swiftly changed to a blue ring and a white inner circle for the rest of the war. Still, I digress.
Your SR-71 painting effort is amazing and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Cheers, all the best for the holidays. Bill H. Tasmania

Your model depicts an aircraft I was blessed to see fly while I was on deployment to Mildenhall England. Unfortunately 974 was the last Blackbird lost. Following an engine explosion after leaving Kadena AB, the aircraft crashed into the Pacific. Both crew members ejected safely. Great work on your model! Your channel is very informative. Thank you for sharing your work!

Thanks for sharing this. Your Blackbird videos have just about convinced me to snag a kit. Great work!

The person in the back was the RSO or Rear Seat Operator. He handled various radio, nav and sensor functions.

Lol your funny, i really liked your intro at the hobby shop 😂, i remember having that feeling before too lol. That kit turned out beautifully. Your very talented & a good salesman, i will be buying a a Blackbird now. It looks much bigger than a 1:48 scale tho. Thanks for sharing

@2:45, the back seat is the RSO. Also for the pilots you can get very good SR-71 pilots from BAM Models for not a lot of money, handy if like me you don't have access to a 3D printer. Nice build though, enjoyed watching this, and yes, those engine nacelles were a pig to get right.

Very good summary. I built one early in the year and while it was challenging in spots, I like the results I achieved. I compared the kit details with the Blackbird on display at the SAC Museum near Ashland, NE and to my eye, they got over 90% of the panel details on the real thing.

Revell has also designed the kit with a SR-71B variant in mind. Who knows when we might see it though.

great job on your SR-71 I am building one at the moment and I am up to the wings and fuselage and alignment but they don't seem to fit very well

Great result Chris! Loved the cockpit and engine details.
I have yet to be captivated by any of the top-shelf models when I visit the hobby store… the 1:16 armour kits by a certain manufacturer are tragically lacking in detail.
Maybe one of the big Tamiya aircraft kits at some point?

does this model kit of the sr 71 come with landing gear and wheels? as i would like to make this kit sitting on its wheels, that is if the kit comes with wheels. Thanks Richard

The gap you’re talking about at 6:00 is supposed to be there it’s how the skin expands when it’s hot. Research fail. Hey, That’s model building tho. I appreciate you sharing and putting it out there 🤗🤭

I bought the Revell 1:72 Blackbird on Amazon about a year ago... It had some really bad tooling, I guess, 'cuz it just didn't go together right... There were gaps in the fuselage (yes, I know about the leaking fuel on the tarmac), and the elevons wouldn't stay in place... I got it halfway built, and it looked like Skunkwork's slide rules were defective... I sent it back to Amazon half=built in the box...
Now I'm thinking about this one, but I'm kinda leary about buying it... Somebody tell me something good...
