Epic Maui to Lanai downwind outrigger surfing

One of the most unknown sports is outrigger canoeing. Sure, most people know an outrigger from the movies or some publication, or have seen it somewhere in Polynesia, but most don't really know the sport, what it's capable of, and how fun it is from flat water to actually "surfing". This video demonstrates the "surfing" aspect of this amazing sport.

Watch a downwind surf crossing with Kai Bartlett and Bobby Pratt. Pure downwind surfing.

Just when I thought I had viewed every OC-1 video on the tube you post this amazing video. Watching you guys surfing those bumps and constantly flying the ama is a lesson in itself. Amazing conditions, amazing paddling, and fantastic voice over work and music. Excellent promo for OC-1 !!!

It is always fascinating how one can extract energy out of a traveling wave by keeping a particular phase shift with respect to it. While we see boats doing this on a wave, the same principle is used in many electric motors where a synchronous rotation on a stator is followed by a rotor working at a lag angle with respect to it but the lag depends on the load and, all rotating at the same frequency of the 'wave'.
I believe all young people should be introduced to such principles while having fun with the science involved and the mathematics that describes it all in such an elegant manner and to think that the particles of the water do not move much laterally but oscillate with a heavy up and down component to produce a traveling wave, it makes it all more of a miracle!

Ive been in an OC6 and we managed to catch a few swells in a moonlite paddle and it was breathtaking - flying over the water. Can't even begin to imagine it non-stop for that length of time AND in an OC1!!!😂😂😂😂

I love the paddling and the video. Would be a sure started if I wasn't 70!!!
Quick question. I notice the paddle blade seems to be flat to slightly curved away from the direction of the paddle stroke. All canoe paddling and Rowing I did years ago used blades that curved to hold the water. Am I seeing straight?
