i never noticed this before, but the way scar abandoned his name and everything God had given him is very similar to how Ed and Al burned down their house - they're all on a path they feel they have to walk, no going back

They don't go into it to much in the anime but scar LOVES animals. He sees that little panda and desperately wants to pet it!

Ling's my favourite character. He just gets so much of the coolest scenes and a really great arc down the line.

But for a fun fact, Chinese Emperor searching for immortality is a pretty huge thing in fiction, FMA being no exception, because it's actually based in history, . Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, is famous for his search for immortality. It was to the extent that the biggest theory on the cause of his death was mercury poisoning from trying to ingest it as an elixir.

The anime never explains Ling's plan or how May knows about Ed, but the manga does. If you only want to know what the show tells you, stop reading now!

When May first enters the country, she meets some people Ed helped early in the story, and they tell her about this talented young state alchemist who saved them. They forget to mention his height, though, so she imagines him tall and sophisticated.

Ling wants to present the emperor with a clue to immortality to gain his favour, but banks on him not having time to work out how to use it, as he's already on his death bed. (There's no known method of becoming immortal, only rumours that the philosopher's stone might help.)

Daaaang I love Ling Yao and his attendants; along with the introduction of Mei they were a big turn on the side of events, especially for one thing: the introduction of Alkhaestry, something that seems different than Alchemy.

So the little seesaw in Ed’s head. I believe the three on his side said “pride as older brother” “fighting skill” and “advanced alchemy”. On Al’s side it had “taller” “ fighting skill” and then “advanced alchemy” fell knocking Ed’s pride away.

Ed and Al are very well-known alchemists all across Amestris. People ignore their objective (the Philosopher's Stone), but since they're famous, foreigners believe they may know something about the stone and immortality 😊

Powerful people never want to let go of power, so naturally once someone rises to Emperor, the only thing he'd still want that he didn't already have is immortality, so he can keep everything he already has forever. But yeah, I immediately saw the same problem. Make the emperor immortal, and you'll never be his successor, however I'm sure you'd be given an extremely high position, probably directly beneath the Emperor, which means you might get all of the luxurious lifestyle of being high level royalty without the massive responsibilities that come with ruling an empire. Maybe you'd even get immortality too, if you were lucky, if only because you have to try it out on yourself to make sure it works before you bring it to him.
