Thomas Whitfield. His album I’m Encouraged. The Maestro at his finest! Commissioned. Their first six albums on Light records. Rev. Milton Brunson and the Tommies. Chicago’s finest. ANYTHING by Hez (That’s Bishop Hezekiah Walker) and LFCC.Especially during the ‘90’s.

I’ve been listening for a long time but one of the first modern gospel songs/ arrangements that killed me was “ Open Our Eyes” by Earth Wind & Fire. Larry Dunn’s substitutions and passing chords and the vocals by Maurice & Philip were incredible.
Another landmark gospel song and arrangement was “ The Question Is” by The Winans. I consider “ We’re A Winner” by The Impressions . Donny Hathaway “ We Need You Right Now”. Aretha Franklin’s entire live gospel album. Billy Preston did a few gospel records when he was about 16 that were on fire. The Loving Sisters feat: Gladys Mcfadden. I could go on with this list for a while but these records were all a masterclass in one form or another for me and still are !!!❤

When I was minister of music at my home church in the 2010s, we did probably half or a little over half of those songs on the Joe Pace CD you mentioned. It was an absolutely amazing album! In terms of me personally. “Send Up Judah” and “Raise the Praise” by Judith Christie McAllister was huge for my development. I went through both of those albums in 2020 and 2021 during quarantine. I also have to mention “Prince of Praise” by Byron Cage. Those albums I mentioned (and many more to be honest) helped me expand my chord vocabulary or AT LEAST my awareness of them. I say that because I’ve realized over the past 2 years that I’ve actually been using extended and slash chords, but did not know the theory or terminology behind it. I’m better able to tell when extended chords are being used.

1. Kirk Franklin - The Rebirth (My Life, My Love, My All is one of my favorite Gospel songs of all time)

2. Marvin Sapp - Thirsty

3. Doonie McClurkin - Live in London and More .. (I believe Kevin Bond played on this live album)

4. Fred Hammond x Radical for Christ - Spirit Of David

5. Smokie Norful - I Need You Now

Corey, I'm a big fan of your work! I think you should make a video on essential albums and songs that every Gospel (or a lover of Gospel) player should know, from Mahalia Jackson's era to Maverick City.

In Jazz, it's easy to find fake books for Standards, but there's not much info on what songs we should know besides popular hymns.

1) Ellen By Request by Ellen Marsh. 2) Reflections on a journey by Greg Howlett especially “Count, your many blessings“. 3) Pretty much anything Gordon mote especially his Christmas album. 4) I know it’s not “gospel” per se but Oscar Peterson Christmas album. 5) Come Sunday Charlie Haden and Hank Jones. Bonus: Alone With My Faith Henry Connick Jr. it would rate higher but I don’t love every track.
