Jay Gatsby and his own ambition and imagination are the villain of the story. Gatsby has created a life and an imagined version of person who does not exist, and when he realizes that vision is not reality, he spirals leading to the ultimate tragedy of the story. He never truly loved Daisy, he loved the idea he had of her.
