The original Checker Neyland was fan-created. Someone created the website and worked everything out, including the specs and the notification of attending fans. The school admin didn't have anything to do with it. Like all good things, it was grass roots-based and then subsequently taken over by someone in an office.

Tennessee had already checkered Neyland in 2014 for the Florida game

That’s not in Tennessee history books. The checkerboard on the Ayers Hall tower was visible on the field. Coach Neyland told his players don’t stop until you’ve run to the checkerboard.

Technically, we checkered Neyland for the UF game in 2014 a few weeks after that OU game. And we’d also checkered TBA a few times prior as well, so there was precedent you could say

Theres orange checkerboard somewhere on tennessees campus which translated to uniforms because it looked good and that oklahoma game kind of took it to where it is now
