I remember how when I first started playing violin with 6 my cat always came to my room to lay next to my feet. When I played horrible, he left, but when it started to sound better he came back. He was a lovely cat and I miss him very much

For the last 11 years, whenever I start playing the Sibelius Concerto, my cat Buddy instantly recognizes the first note, and immediately meows loudly, begging me to stop.

By the second measure, he runs up the stairs with great indignation, and buries himself in the closet in the far bedroom, seeking to insulate himself from the acoustic horrors I am creating.

The cat is sharp though, as things have progressed such that now when he sees me take out the violin case, he begins meowing, for which I say "hey...its rude to complain before I actually play a note!

However, Buddy does hang out for my jazz and blues sometimes, and will meow right after I finish a tune, which constitutes his approval.

My best cat and violin story, is that one time I was performing Lalo, live on the radio, and my beautiful calico cat Chewy heard it. My ex-wife (yeah that marriage was not the greatest decision of my life) told me that when Chewy heard my playing, she ran up to the speakers and was rubbing against them and purring.

Perhaps that is the greatest compliment of my playing that I have ever had. However, I have two cats that hang out when I practice, even when I am playing Schradieck, so I give them a lot of credit for that.

The cats do not like high tones, but rather low tones, such as the viola. From experience with my cat

My violin teacher had cats. They were probably “trained” to listen to violin. Once one of the cats wanted me to take them home and followed me! Alas, teacher did find out anyways….*sigh*

My dog actually hates when I play guitar and starts barking and then runs out of the room, but when I play flute he really enjoys it and actually even comes into my room sometimes to listen 😅

Yeah, my chickens aren't big fans of the violin, either. They shake their heads like they're trying to get the sound out of their ears and I feel sure that if they could, they would clap their wings over them.
