OK, we're doing England today.
I'm putting on my chav tracksuit (amidst a heatwave) and I'm getting straight into the part.
Let's go.
One of my favourite films of all time, is "The Hustler" (1961), starring Paul Newman.
It's all about tragedy, pain and high prospects that never materialized.
Self-destruction and underachievement
I love tragedy.
I love pain.
I love underachievement.
So how could I not love the English national team? I had loved them all the way back since Euro 96, just for the kick ass Umbro Jerseys. In every tournament, I was certain that England was gonna win. People tried to explain to me what the "curse" of England was, about Italia 90 or whatever, but I would have none of that B.S. I was three years old back in 1990. I had no idea what happened so who cares. But in the late 90s? With these players? Michael Owen alone could win any tournament....
Well, tournaments came and went, with constant disappointment, but there was a definitive moment when I realized that "Damn, there must be some truth in this whole "Jinx" scenario".
World Cup 2006. I was looking at the squad in awe. Gerrard and Lampard? On the same team? You'd think that these unholy unions could only happen in Dragon Ball - Z. Literally, the amount of talent in that squad was un-be-lie-va-ble. With all these free kick masters, every free kick outside of the box should be converted into a goal. I never bet, but for that time, I bet on England winning.
Well, we all know what happens next.... Referee disallowes a clean goal against (of all teams) Germany, a narrow win over Ecuador and another elimination via penalty shootout.
Pffff.
These experiences, these instances of tragedy in real life, are cathartic. You realize that sometimes, no matter how good you are, you are going to fail. Many times, again and again. Like playing Dark Souls. It really helped me grow, to be honest.
Nowadays, I don't really care about England that much. They're actually a better "team" than those consisting of "legendary" line ups, but except for Harry Kane, there are no players of "that" stature. There are no "Galacticos" of worldwide star status. Looking at the starting line-up, the expectations are not sky high anymore.
And this might be the reason they win some international trophy in the future.
