Tudor’s Forgotten Gem: Why Did They Kill Off the “North Flag”?

A Discussion around Tudor's Cult Classic - The North Flag. A model that introduced many firsts for the brand in 2015 when it arrived but has also been swept aside in recent years to promote the Ranger and Black Bay Pro as its successors. The question is whether the recent interest in a model like Rolex's Land-Dweller might spur Tudor to reintroduce this model in the near future? Could they re-adapt their own integrated bracelet sports watch design using the North Flag as the Template for the "Ranger II"?

I daily wore my north flag and was an early adopter, ultimately ended up getting rid of it for a 114270 explorer, and after a year with that, I bought a Pelagos 39 and have daily wore that the last 2 years. If Tudor rereleased the North Flag and did it correctly I’d be absolutely thrilled. It was a great watch, I wish I still had my old one. But it def was a starting point for modern Tudor, and it’s strange how they’ve abandoned the idea, name and design completely. It needed some little tweaks, but it is still the coolest watch Tudors ever put out because it’s unique and not really like anything else from under the hans wilsdorf umbrella

Still own my North Flag. My first Tudor. Super cool and unique.

I saw the Tudor North Flag for the first time in Singapore in 2015 at a Tudor AD and almost bought it. Haven't forgotten this watch since then. It was unlike any other Tudor and it remains so. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and reminding us of this beauty.

Wow, I hadn't even thought of the North Flag as a Land Dweller comp! The similarities are positively uncanny, aren't they? It makes you wonder if Tudor designers had the Oyster Quartz (the case, especially) in mind when they were developing the North Flag. LOVE the creative renders you came up with, IDGuy!! Great video!! 🎉

10 Years have passed since the introduction of the Tudor "North Flag" which now has largely been swept aside and replaced by the Ranger and Black Bay Pro. Could now be an ideal opportunity for a model line like this to be reintroduced? Tudor taking what they have learnt and gained over the last decade (technology, manufacturing and watchmaking) and develop a refreshed collection 🥃

I have a North Flag, and freaking love it. It is such a unique Tudor, and striking. My only complaint was a previous @IDguy video on the watch, where his rendering had a yellow frame around the date window that looked so good, and now I wish my watch had that.

Thank you for creating some of the best watch videos on the platform! Simply amazing to what level of detail you go and the eloquence to present it too. Thank you!

I'd love to see you do a video about watch typography. From obvious stuff like the Grand Seiko logo to the shapes of numerals and how they affect the overall visuals of a watch, there's quite a bit to talk about.

Just the way they did the lettering on e.g. old Rolex submariners that gave them a more organic feel compared to the clean lettering we get today is pretty interesting to me.

I own the North Flag which is an amazing watch with several first for the Tudor, open caseback, inhouse movement and integrated bracelet. It pays tribute to an expedition in Greenland. To me this is a modern explorer. Definitely a keeper in my collection. 😊

Great video, you covered everything 😊😊

Personally, I'd take the North Flag over the Land Dweller any day of the week. It just seems more cohesive and stylish, regardless of the price. Just because something costs more, doesn't mean it's better, in my opinion.

Always great content. You and Mike (This Watch That Watch) are all I can take these days. I prefer thoughts and ideas. I do enjoy Teddy, though. Great photography and he's truly done so much to bring new people in. Sorry for the rambling 🙂

Interesting thing to point out…the North Flag’s movement from the early days were not produced by Kenissi. The rumor is that the movements were produced by Rolex, in Rolex’s own facility. If you own a NF (or Pelagos) from 2015, its movement could not have been produced by Kenissi, since Kenissi was founded in 2016.

Great video. I've seen a few of your videos and need to comment on your renderings of what a particular time piece could/might look like with some changes is next level. Very creative and sound interpretations of watches. I really like the current Ranger model but there's something about the North Flag that just appeals more to me. The pop of yellow is incredible and I don't even mind the power reserve on the dial for that particular watch. It just seems to work, for me. Having said that, I'm all about a second generation Ranger that combines elements from both watches.

Last year, my Rolex/Tudor AD pulled out a new old stock northflag and asked if I wanted it.

Purchased the watch a few days later after a bit of research, and have to say, feel very lucky to have landed such a deal.

The watch is still brand new and unworn; I haven’t had the heart to rock it yet. But I do love the look and feel.

I'm literally wearing my new Black Bay Pro with black dial as I watch this video. I must say, the BB Pro really does give that Explorer II, tool watch vibe and it is so balance and great-looking. I can really see how it might crowd out other offerings targeted at similar wearers like the North Flag.

I have the North Flag in my collection and absolutely love it for the reasons you mention. I normally admire your renders but in this case, your design takes it away from its avant-guard look and back to normality. That would be a wasted opportunity in my opinion. If they re-did it they should keep the power reserve. Keep the modern design language. Keep the display case-back. Keep the odd ceramic bezel. Just make it a bit thinner and in titanium like the Pelagos! Then they should follow up with a GMT version.

I think you made a Tudor Land Dweller render!

My take: keep the dial, power reserve, date, layout, but do red accents instead of yellow. Refine the case, widen the lug openings so it can accept nato straps as well, and add an on-the-fly adjustable clasp.

Also my preference would be to make it in titanium.
