Keir Starmer sets out plan to overhaul the NHS after damning report - watch in full

Sir Keir Starmer will warn the NHS must "reform or die", as the government publishes an independent investigation into the state of the health service.

The report - ordered by Health Secretary Wes Streeting days after he took on the role - was carried out by peer and surgeon Lord Darzi.

It will conclude the NHS is in a "critical condition", with record waiting lists and too much of its budget spent in hospitals, as well as saying the nation's health had significantly deteriorated over the past 15 years

The Financial Times have asked the government, by means of the freedom of information, a breakdown of the alleged £22bn black hole, and been told that they need time to compile and complete Maybe all vat register businesses, should forward payment of their vat liability but not submit their return, and when asked to do so, inform HMRC, that the tenure will be submitted i”in due course”.

The only prime minister i've ever seen who could give an anadin tablet a headache. He is the Michael Foot of the 21st century. Should have stuck to the day job.

The state of the nhs is more dire than people realise. I trained in the nhs and was damned proud of it but it took working overseas to make me understand that there many other countries with infinitely better health systems.
A couple of examples. I live in Australia where we have a mix of public and private.
My late mother in law came out to visit but she had forgotten to bring enough of an ongoing medication. We have a reciprocal health agreement with the uk. I took her to see my gp who took her medical history and blood pressure and the prescription for the medication she needed. On the way out she was asked to sign the relevant forms in order for Aus to claim back the cost from the nhs. The same hing happened at the pharmacy.
A friend from Aus found herself in hospital while on holiday in uk. Because she knows how the system works she asked the staff for the relevant forms to sign so the the uk could claim back the cost of her care. To her intense surprise the staff member “ Oh don’t worry about that, it’s not worth the paperwork”. No wonder the whole world laughs. Its unsustainable.
Nobody is turned away but each country has a responsibility to cough up!
Meanwhile only a couple of months later a friends father in law who had recently retired out here needed a hip replacement. He had it done privately. No complications and it cost AU$18000. At almost exact the same time my 88 year old mum needed the same op. She’s in the uk and the nhs waiting list was so long that she had it done it done privately. Again it no complications. It cost her £16000? There are about $2 to the pound sterling.
That’s $32000 in uk but $180000 in the Australia ! And the care is just as good if not better out here! What’s more our health care professionals have better pay and conditions, and a healthier work/life balance. Such absolute greed. This is also what it would cost the nhs every time they seek help from the private sector.A rip off.
One other things that needs to considered. We have only so many health care professionals who often work across both the nhs and private sector. Has nobody considered that they can’t be in 2 places at once! Clearly many more training places are required that includes competent trainers to produce competent staff.

This guy is no better than the rest of them, needs a complete overhaul from the beginning to the end. They are more than happy to receive payments for their heating. I'm pretty sure this wasn't in their manifesto. They have basically conned the public to vote for them.

I do not doubt Starmers commitment to fixing the NHS and other broken systems. This creates hope. Only time will tell though. He has a majority government, and can no longer make big compromises justified by pragmatism, and doing whatever it takes to win power.
Again, i live in hope, and watch carefully.
Mps should forego their energy benefits as an act of union to be more in line with the thousands of people feeling the cold in their homes.

Starmer speaks well when it comes to the NHS, reform is definitely what is needed but it’s time to see it put into practice

Im sure all the money. The capitalist labour give to other countries would be welcomed by the nhs. And if i was in power. We would not be given our money to repair roads in malaya

The cost of treating the elderly for hyperthermia in the NHS will far exceed the cost of the winter fuel allowance.

The NHS needs nationalising again.
The Beuracracy as well. I did a thirty hour shift because a lady who often fell, had had a fall.
The fall was unobserved. I checked her neurological observation, TPR etc etc as Ive done since the eighties on countless people who've But nowadays, if someone falls...even if they're ok, they go to A&E.

The ambulance arrived after six hours as the lady was going to bed. The paramedics knew as the fall was unobserved they had to take her in, so out on the stretcher we went and by 11pm we were sat in the ambulance outside A&E tjirty miles behind six other ambulances all full of patients because the one A&E that served the county was full.

The patients couldn't be left on trolleys so the ambulances sat idle for hours with one cold upset dementia patient whod had a fall ten hours before.

The Doctor finally saw her at 5AM. Did the same checks i had done of neuro observation. Said "shes fine" then we waited till noon for transport back.

Nurses can't make common sense decisions because of beurocracy.

That one fall cost the NHS around five thousand pounds. It tied up staff, tied up ambulances, led to me missing work for a day, etc etc.

Its these things we need to change. This is a microcosm of the problem.
