"Even as I prepare to leave, my heart will stay as it has since I was a child right here with the United Nations."

He also thanked the South Korean government and his fellow Koreans for their utmost support.
UN General Assembly President Peter Thompson thanked Ban for his biggest accomplishments,... which he said were his unceasing efforts on the issue of climate change, his vision and determination to realize a more just, prosperous and secure world, and his support for gender equality.

Ban will be replaced by Antonio Guterres, who served as Portugal's prime minister for seven years and as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for ten years.
He will take the reins from January 1st, becoming the ninth secretary general of the UN.
Guterres promised that his tenure will focus on streamlining the UN's internal functions, cultivating peace and promoting sustainable development.
He will be the first former head of government to run the world body.
