For anyone still unclear on the tournament format, this is called a "double elimination" bracket.

Losing in the winners bracket sends you to the losers bracket, where you compete against other players who have lost once, and losing in the losers bracket eliminates you. Because the winners-side grand finalist is undefeated, the losers-side grand finalist must defeat the winners-side player twice to win the tournament—the first of such victories is called the "bracket reset", which is the term Gotham was referring to—while the winners-side player only has to defeat the losers-side player once to win the tournament.

This format is very common in video games and is the standard for most fighting game tournaments.
