I'm old and I don't fully agree.
First of all, you're painting a very nice picture of family relations here.Not everyone is lucky to have the family support they need and even if there's some level of support, that doesn't mean there's not some level of toxicity added to the mix. Simply stating that family is great is an oversimplified version of reality.
Second, my material posessions matter to me.Take my guitar, my books, my comics and my art supplies away from me and you see a side of me, you don't want to see. Your way of seeing the world is not mine and I'm well aware of what makes me happy- and what doesn't.
The most important and the hardest lesson I had to learn is that I don't matter. And, by the way, I'm far from being lonely.But even my spouse and my kids could and would make it without me.
