An RF modulator (or radio frequency modulator) is an electronic device whose input is a baseband signal which is used to modulate a radio frequency source.

RF modulators are used to convert games like signals from devices such as media players, VCRs and game consoles to a format that can be handled by a device designed to receive a modulated RF input, such as a radio or television receiver.
Prior to the introduction of specialised video connector standards such as SCART, TVs were designed to only accept signals through the aerial connector: signals originate at a TV station, are transmitted over the air, and are then received by an antenna and demodulated within the TV. When equipment was developed which could use a television receiver as its display device, such as VCRs, DVD players, early home computers, and video game consoles, the signal was modulated and sent to the RF input connector.

i work at a university, and i would love to use this there! we are hoping to create a TV channel that would go on display computers throughout our small campus. is there something we could do to do this? it would be similar to having a test channel like at best buy, but it would display campus news and events and such. thanks!

I was wondering if i used a VCR that outputs an analogue signal and attached an amplified antenna to it if i could broadcast within my own property and pick up a signal with another antenna connected to an analogue TV in a nearby room?

There’s quite a few good music venues here in south London, often playing punk, indie and the like. Having a transmitter would probably be excellent for giving bands exposure, especially if it’s on the radio and television. Could you have a pirate satellite radio station that these pubs use to showcase the underground music scene in south London?

I need this because I'm trying to record on my VCR but the HDMI to RCA converter I have is crap, so I'm hoping to broadcast to the now vacant analogue TV channels of Australia, my TV can still access the static, solely to record that onto my VCR.

Is the ve coax for analog or digital? Also how do you get sound on the channel? Also how should you play the program? A VCR?

Found this device very interesting as a FCC licensed HAM radio operator you could actually set up a couple hundred watt TV station, HAM radio operators are allocated 4 channels of the Cable tv spectrum to broadcast on.. I wonder if you put a antenna on the output of it if near by tv would receive it if it had a antenna on the Cable tv input. I know this device would not have the broadcast power to go any large distance, but it would be a cool test even if it worked a few feet... and if you were a ham you could amplify that signal and legally broadcast up to 200 watt signal even on the entry level technician license. 100 watts can go 50+ miles easily, further licenses allow up to 1500 watts.. I know, as a kid, I hooked our cable tv up to a antenna and the local cable tv company came knocking saying something in our house was broadcasting their signal and that's not allowed. It was my boombox that had a 5" tv in it, it had a external antenna input that internally was wired directly to the telescoping antenna... so it was broadcasting the cable tv signal around our neighborhood unknow to me till they told us.
