Learn Mandarin Chinese Language Basic Characters and Daily Conversations

You may think learning Chinese is difficult since there are tens of thousands of Chinese characters, but actually only around 1,000 words are most frequently used in daily conversations.

So where to start? Well, here are the most useful Chinese characters you need to know. We show these characters with writing stroke order, pinyin, meaning and example sentences.

Please note that the pronunciations in the videos are Mandarin Chinese (using Pinyin romanization) and simplified characters are used instead of traditional.

Modern Mandarin Chinese has many homophones. The same spoken syllable may be represented by many characters, depending on meaning. A single character may also have a range of meanings, or sometimes quite distinct meanings.

Chinese is not alphabetic so the writing is not related to its phonetics. There are many styles of Chinese writing and All the Chinese characters on our site are Kaiti (the standard style) in the simplified form.

Learning to write and read in Chinese takes quite a lot of time and effort, but it’s not as hard as it might seem at first. Hopefully our videos will make the journey a bit easier. Start from the most basic and commonly used Chinese Characters above as you start your Chinese Learning journey. These Characters are very simple with only a few strokes. You’ll find them easy to remember as well, since some of the characters actually resemble their meaning.

Many people start to realize that learning Chinese Mandarin is getting more and more popular and useful, no matter you are a school student, traveling in China, or dealing business with Chinese.

Actually, Learning Chinese Mandarin is never going to be easy, just as any of the second language. Mandarin Chinese use tones to indicate differences of meaning between words or syllables. Modern Standard Chinese has four tones and Chinese words often have only one syllable.
