If its border with Spain becomes an EU external border, the British Overseas Territory will be isolated. Gibraltar's economy depends on free access to the EU, and its people worry that Spain could try to reassert its claims to the peninsula.

Gibraltar will be always better as it is, out of Spain. Gibraltar doesn´t need to worry about get out of EU, as Gibraltar will find out how to improve the economy and grow again as did over the past 3 centuries when there were no EU. It has got an outstanding geopolitical location in the gate of the mediterranean sea and many services are being provided over here. I don´t think "real tourism" will be affected whatsoever as Gibraltar keeps it charming features and tourists will still visit it and enjoy the restaurants, the superbeautiful heritage buildings, the streets, the food, the lookout on Top of the rock, the nice monkeys and the panoramic sea views of Europe, Africa and the seas. The people living in Gibraltar are happy to be under British rule. The people working in Gibraltar crossing the border are also happy it is under British rule. Living in Gibraltar is very expensive while taxation is low. Living in Spain is cheaper while taxation is high and unemployment locally is high.. hence reason many Gibraltar workers live in Spain. It is very important for Gibraltar and equally as much for Gib workers in Spain retain free movement. The Spanish Government could do more for their own people by encouraging more tourism and reducing taxation aka Gibraltar.

The Spanish could walk into Gibraltar at any time post-brexit. The EU would be officially neutral but naturally sympathise with a member state against a non-member. Similarly in Northern Ireland. Regular Irish troops with EU logistical support (customs officers perhaps there nominally to police the new border) could take back the six counties in an afternoon. Meanwhile in the S Atlantic Argentina could see a prize opportunity of taking the Malvinas. Of course the brexiters say they thought about all this when they voted, including making themselves and everyone else poorer. Brexit the dumbest vote since the Germans elected Hitler.

I feel sorry for people of Gibraltar for this mess. Bilateral agreements shall be made, of course in a way that doesn't puts sovereignty in any risk. UK joining Schengen area is another option, and would be most welcome. Greetings from Switzerland.
