Review - Fuji XF 35mm f1.4 - My Go-To lens for the X-Pro3

The Fujinon XF 35/1,4 R for Fujifilm APS-C cameras was one of the first three lenses released for the system back in 2012. An in my opinion kinda underrated lens thats very suitable as an every day prime on most Fuji camera bodies.

I bought this lens brand new a week ago for 469 uk pounds after taking a long time choosing between it and the f2 version. Here’s the reality - the focusing “noise” some people talk about is so overstated as to be beyond ridiculous. The focusing speed is not on par with the latest lenses but is still very useable. It is as quick as one needs for most photography, although those looking for an ultra fast focusing run and gun lens may be a little disappointed, in which case get the f2. The images this lens produces at f1.4 have a definite something - I can’t define it, but it’s there. Gorgeous bokeh. I am very happy, having invested such a lot of money (for me) in this lens new. By the way, I do street almost exclusively, but not run and gun style. My other lens is a 27mm pancake, and for those with that lens asking if there is any point buying another lens so close in field of view, I say buy it. You will not be disappointed. To be fair, for street, it would probably be better to couple this 35mm with a 23mm, but I like my 27mm pancake for it’s size and portability.

That's the only Fujifilm lens I have not even thought of selling, even though I used the f2 WR version, there's a pleasing character to the images that I cannot explain without the word 'magic'

I ordered one for my XE3 - 322 English squids. Amazingly it arrived Christmas Eve. My first impression over the f2 version extra charm and effortlessness.

This lens is incredible. I have the f2 since feb 2017 and had impressed me ever since, but the 1.4 is even better and magical. Colors, character...

I seem to gravitate to using the 18, 35 f/1.4, or 56 on my X-Pro2. My favorite lenses on the X-E2 is the 14 and 27. I don't mind using these old "loud" lenses, they always impress me with results which is the important objective for me. More than once the 35 and 56 AF has captured me shots in very low light situations and that was with the X-Pro2. Excellent video Mattias. :)

I’ve owned the 35mm f/1.4 since 2012 when I bought it with my X Pro1, and it’s still my favourite to use with my X Pro2 and XT3

Nice review as always!! There is something special about this lens which I’ve had for years. Lack of weather seal not a problem I’ve used it on all weathers with a bit of loose cling film nice results

If was going into Fuji again, it would be this lens, the 56 and the 16 F1.4 - in that order. Yes, this lens really is top of the pile even if it’s the cheapest of the 3

I bought this lens for the 2nd time. Missed it too much... The difference in character, I think, comes from it's rendition of the contrast of the subject. When comparing side by side with the f2 WR version, I see a finer gradation from light to shadow and a bigger difference in highlight peaks and fall off to black on the f1.4.

It's my first lens in Fuji this year, and it completely blew me away. Converted me immediately.

The XF 35 1.4 almost never leaves my camera body, and this is for three years running. It's image quality is impeccable, and I find the field of view to be tight, yet wide enough. I first purchased the F2, and later sold it after renting the F1.4.

I like the 1.4 version on my X-T10. The only problem I’ve ever had is my chunky fingers occasionally moving it from f/1.4 to maybe f/2-2.8 by mistake sometimes.

As much as I love my 35mm f/2, I've always wanted to give this "classic" lens a try. "Character" is something I always hear associated with it. Great shots! Can't wait for that X-Pro3 review! :)
